2014 Spring Concert Series

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS – Save these dates!!

As we put this newsletter together, even we were impressed by the caliber of artists for this, our final season.  Each and every one of them is an elite world class guitarists.  And perhaps it is fitting that in 2001, our first concert performer was Don Ross and Don will be the one to end an era with us in May.

It would be great to see all of you come out and support our upcoming artists!

Peppino D’Agostino-  Saturday March 8th

Not sure how one goes from being self-taught after playing his cousins guitar at age 10, to being  named “Acoustic Guitarist Of The Year” in 2007 by Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers Choice Awards and also  Guitarist Of The Year” by Fingerstyle Guitar in 2008, but Peppino sure has the recipe.  Peppino returns for his second visit with MFGS and has received accolades from renowned guitaris Andy Mckee.   Peppino’s command of the instrument is amazing,” says McKee. “He can play in so many styles, employing many different techniques. He is one of the most versatile acoustic guitarists I’ve ever met.”   And another guitarist you’ve heard of , Tommy Emmanual: “  Peppino’s music is deep and beautiful.”

Michael Chapdelaine – Saturday March 29th

Michael Chapdelaine is the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres; the Guitar Foundation of America International Classical Guitar Competition and the National Fingerstyle Championships at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield , Kansas.  From New York's Lincoln Center to the Cactus Cafe in Austin, from Milano to Bangkok, Michael continues to enchant, dazzle and surprise audiences and critics alike as he redefines the modern acoustic guitar with his amazing technique, "soulful" expressiveness, and versatility as a performer, composer and arranger/producer. His performances, played on both steel string and classical guitars, include musical styles ranging from blues to Bach to country to rhythm n' blues as he wins his audiences hearts with breath taking technique and the poetic magic of his original musical portraits and landscapes.

Muriel Anderson - Saturday April 26th

Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. An engaging performer, her obvious joy of music, humor, and facility across musical genres is revered by guitarists and audiences worldwide. She has recorded with country legend Chet Atkins, performed in New York with Les Paul, at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall with the Chicago Symphony and in Tennessee with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. She is host and founder of Muriel Anderson’s All Star Guitar Night®, the premiere music event at the semi-annual NAMM music trade shows, and also the founder of the Music for Life Alliance charity.  She is a prolific composer of music on guitar and harp guitar, and tours year round in North America, Europe and the Far East.

Don Ross with Caleb Graham- Saturday May 17th

Don Ross has  been touring the world long enough now to have become an influence on a generation of guitarists and other musicians. He feels fortunate to have grown up sheltered from the influence of too many other acoustic guitarists, as it had made it easier for him to focus on the composing and playing of music, rather than focusing on technique-based pyrotechnics. That said, he has still managed to be the only player to win first place twice at the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 1988 and 1996.

Don will be performing with a guitarist that you are lucky to see at this stage of his career. Calum Graham won the Canadian International Fingerstyle Competition in 2010 and steadily has matured into one of the top young guitarists in the world.

All Shows are at Trinity House Theatre
38840 West Six Mile, Livonia, next to I-275

$20 & Trinity House Members $17

 734-464-6302  Door @ 7:30 – Show @ 8pm   Online tickets available this Saturday at www.fingerstyle.org

Each performer will offer a 2 hr guitar workshop at 3pm the day of the show. Workshop tickets are $40 and this gets you a $10 discount on your concert ticket.

STOCKING STUFFERS!!!

Not sure where to start with this one but we are feeling Really BLUE!   L.

Our dear friend and big time MFGS supporter Paul Murphy is ending part of his BlueFish Music commercial venture.  It’s hard to run a store, spend time with customers, do repairs , provide lessons and not end up working 16 hours a day.  Hard to keep up with your kids that way!

Paul will be eliminating the commercial side of his store and Starting Next Week he will be having a huge sale on all of the inventory at Bluefish Music! Paul has more than stocking stuffers too!!

Stop by or call and let Paul help you find something nice for the guitarist in your life! All sorts of guitars from acoustic to electric to bass to mandolin to ukulele!  Pickups, amplifiers, strings, books, capos, picks …. and anything else having to do with guitars.  This is the end of a 10 year adventure for Paul.

Paul is not totally gone since  he will still do guitars repairs and have a studio for lesson  out of Bluefish.   Paul is a great guy and so we wish him well.

Do stop by and get a great deal on some nice stuff.  Keep him in mind for  future lessons or guitar setups or repairs. We all would trust our guitar repairs with Paul!    All the best Paul!!

744 Starkweather St, Plymouth, (734) 927-0675 –

Hrs: Mon-Thu, 1pm-8pm; Fri,1pm-6pm; Sat, 1pm-5pm; closed on Sunday

Here is a Great Idea for a stocking stuffer for your guitarist!

One of our MFGS friends, Trevor Gordon Hall (he performed here in Feb. 2013), is going to record with Windham Hill founder/guitarist Will Ackerman.

In order to help finance this amazing opportunity he has created some great deals for us.  How about for $50 you can get 2 of his signed CDs, one of them is the one he is working on with Will Ackerman and also a 30 minute skype guitar lesson!  For $100 you get 2, 45 min skype lessons or 4 tickets to a show near you (yes he will play in Detroit in the future) Also you get 4 CD’s, one of them is their combined CD, one is Will’s and 2 are Trevor’s.  Trevor has received great accolades from those who have seen him and even Michael Chapdelaine (the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres) and Michael Manring (bassist who played with Michael Hedges)  who is one of, if not,  the best bass guitarist in the world; both have great things to say about Trevor.   Check out Trevor’s site and you will really surprise any guitarist you know!  You can go from $15 up to $5,000 and this is a win-win deal!!!   Check this out !http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-trevor-gordon-hall-record-with-will-ackerman

And another Great Idea from one of our big time supporters and friend of MFGS , Rob Poland of Candyrat Records.  Pick out some of the CDs of his great stable of musicians at www.candyrat.com

Another idea is Candyrat’s Limited Edition flash drive with 100 of their top recordings for only $50.  http://www.candyrat.com/artists/FlashDrives/Top100Tracks/

Born in Latronico, a small village in Southern Italy, Pino moved with his family to Rome in his early childhood. In 1992, he graduated from Santa Cecilia Conservatory with a degree in classical guitar, taking his final exam with a ten-string classical guitar. In the following years, he used the ten-string guitar to play baroque, contemporary and original repertoires.  In 1996, after hearing the music of American guitarist Michael Hedges, Forastiere decided to pick up a six-string acoustic guitar, which is now his only instrument.  The steel string acoustic guitar has transformed his approach to music as described below.

Ed Gerhard this Saturday October 5th!

  #

With influences from Andres Segovia to Mississippi John Hurt,  Grammy Winning Guitarist Ed Gerhard is one of the true masters of steel string fingerstyle guitar.  Playing on 6-string, slide guitar and Hawaiian lap steel, American guitarist-composer Ed Gerhard will perform at the Trinity House Theatre this Saturday night October 5th @8 p.m.  Ed’s music has been featured on Ken Burn’s productions, ‘The National Parks: America's Best Idea' & 'Mark Twain’

  At Trinity House Theatre

38840 W. Six Mile in Livonia just west of I 275

(734) 464-6302 -  Doors at 7:30, show at 8pm!

Ed began playing guitar at 14, after marveling at Andrés Segovia on television. Later on, the music of guitarist John Fahey pointed him toward experimentation with open tunings and inspired him to begin composing guitar music of his own. As a result, what distinguishes Ed’s music is his inventive use of open tuning, which allows a variety of color from one composition to the next. Melodic but free from clichés, his playing goes in unexpected directions. Whether his precise, yet lush sound conveys classic sensibilities or inflections of blues, he gracefully imparts his own distinctive touch. Ed’s agility on his instrument shines through on every tune, but as Seacoast music critic Larry Etscovitz emphasizes, “never for mere technical show, always in the service of beauty"

" one of the richest steel'string sounds you've ever heard!"

                                                                                                                Premier Guitar Magazine

”… Gerhard is considered to have the most exquisite acoustic guitar tone on on the planet”                                                                                                    Acoustic Guitar Magazine

“From the top of his silvery hair down to his electric blue socks, Gerhard throws himself completely into every song he plays,”                                                            Portsmouth Press.

Ed returns to play for MFGS again and this has been his first appearance since 2008!  Ed will perform tunes from his luminous and long career along with songs from his and most recent CD “There and Gone”  Treat yourself to an evening of remarkable music by a legend in acoustic guitar.

Also, Ed is sponsoring a Guitar Workshop at Trinity House from 3pm-5pm prior to the show.  You will have 2 hours with one of the most respected guitar instructors we have ever hosted.  This is for guitarists of all levels and cost is $40!  All workshop attendees receive $10 off of concert tickets!

Ed Gerhard and other events

Dear Friends of MFGS

Occasionally we receive emails at michfingerstyle@gmail.com. One recent email asked why we only have two concerts this fall?  Well, the timing didn't work out between the artists and the availability at Trinity House for other great guitarists to play.  We did feel that we hit the jackpot with the performers we do have. Grammy winning guitarist  Ed Gerhard will perform Saturday October 5th and then on Saturday October 26th we were able to snag Italian master Pino Forasitere!

We hope that you will take the time to attend these concerts for without your support we won't be able to continue this work.  We also support other guitarists when we get information about their performances.  For instance

This Tuesday September 24th, MFGS friend and Michigan Classical Guitar Society member David Polla and his son Darrin will be performing a benefit concert at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial at 7:30pm.  The performance will include some solo classical pieces by David Polla then some solo 'folkish/pop' pieces by Darrin Polla , followed by some duets with voice/steel & nylon string/ mandola. After a break there will be some horns and drums joining the group.  Grosse Pointe War Memorial is on the shores of Lake St. Clair at 32 Lake Shore Rd, Grosse Pte Farms, inbetween Cadieux Road and Moross (7mile) (313) 881-751.  Proceeds will go to Living Hope Church.  Support local musicians!

Friday September 27th our friends the California Guitar Trio are at the Ark!

On Saturday October 5th MFGS is honored to present

Grammy Award Winning guitarist ED GERHARD!

@  Trinity House Theatre
734-464-6302

Ed last graced our stage in 2008 and he has been performing at concerts and workshops all over the world since then.  Looks like Ed comes around every 5 years so don’t miss the opportunity to hear him perform and sit with Ed for 2 hours at his guitar workshop and receive ½ off your concert ticket!

Call 248-646-4030 for reservations to the workshop and then pick out your favorite seat before the show!!

Italian master Pino Forastiere will be returning for his 5th appearance here at MFGS on Saturday October 26th.  More information to come.

All MFGS shows will be hosted at the Trinity House Theatre ,

located at 38840 W. Six Mile, Livonia, MI 48152, unless otherwise stated.

Please visit their website and support them by attending some of their other shows.     http://www.trinityhouse.org/index.htmlhttp://www.trinityhouse.org/index.htmlhttp://www.trinityhouse.org/index.htmlww

Guitarist Joe Scott studied at the Guitar Institute of Technology in California under some of the worlds finest guitarists including Robin Ford, Tommy Tedesco, Frank Gambale and the great Joe Pass.  After a stint with the New Cristy Minstrels he returned to Colorado and performed with the band Wind Machine for the next 14 years. In 1985 Joe's abilities began to change and he ended up with the diagnosis of Focal Dystonia.  Forced with this career ending diagnosis Joe went to study with classical guitarist David Leisner in NYC.  Over a period of years he relearned how to play the guitar and, like our friend Billy McLaughlin, Joe's musical career was on tract again.

Cellist Hannah was classically trained and studied with Gabriel Magyar of the Hungarian String Quartet. Initially playing in her school orchestra with her sister Sabina, Viktor Krauss and the renowned bluegrass great Alison Krauss. Hannah continued performing in the Colorado in area symphonies and festivals. At some point eager to stretch herself she entered the world of rock, funk and alternative music and her repitoire included everything from Dvorak to Zepplin, baroque to the Grateful Dead.

Hannah Alkire met Joe after receiving a call to play on a Boulder Colorado ensemble's recording. Following the directions to the rehearsal she was amazed to drive past her house and 3 doors down was where Joe Scott lived and of course, you guessed it, yes....Acoustic Eidolon was founded, Joe and Hannah were married and now have 2 children and a household of musical instruments.

This Saturday, Trevor Gordon Hall - This Sunday Picking Party

  #

Saturday February 9th @ 8 pm - Doors At 7:30

@ Trinity House Theatre

MFGS presents

Trevor Gordon Hall

The Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society was founded in 2001 by local guitarists who had a profound appreciation of fingerstyle guitar music.  The mission of MFGS is to promote fingerstyle guitar through performances, workshops and goodwill.  We have been fortunate to host over 80 concerts and guitar workshops in the last 12 years as well as 3-4 Picking Parties each year. This Saturday we are bringing in Candyrat Recording Artist Trevor Gordon Hall.  Although not well known in these parts, part of our mission is to bring up and coming guitarists to Michigan in order to promote their music and allow our members the opportunity to see some of these musicians earlier in their career. Trevor has certainly impressed many famous musicians and his list of great reviews is listed here.   http://www.trevorgordonhall.com/press.html

One of our favorites reviews is from Windham Hill Record Founder William Ackerman who says

"Trevor Gordon Hall is one of the few post-Michael Hedges guitarists who has managed to incorporate that vast repository of innovation while having an artistic voice strong enough to steadfastly avoid imitation. However technically proficient Trevor is, he is not one of the swarm of guitarists who revel in guitar gymnastics for their sake alone. His technique follows artistic expression as it should. Trevor is capable of a range of styles while having every note seem to express something sincere and meaningful to him. This is a fine debut from a guitarist we will need to pay attention to.” Will Ackerman - Grammy winning guitarist/composer and producer, founded the influential Windham Hill Records

Tickets will be available at the door but we recommend that you  call Trinity House at 734 464-6302 to see if tickets remain and you may reserve them through Trinity House.

Trevor Gordon Hall Feb 9th, plus Picking Party Feb 10th

Saturday February 9th  @ 8 pm - Doors At 7:30

Trevor Gordon Hall

$20 for General Admission - $17 for Trinity House Members

Rob Poland & CandyRat Records has introduced us to an amazing array of acoustic guitarists. Trevor Gordon Hall is one of that stable’s ‘young guns’. Trevor is a Philadelphia based acoustic instrumentalist whose compositions range in style from driving rhythms to soft melodic phrases.   Trevor has deftly incorporated a kalimba onto one of his guitars and into some of his pieces.

Trevor has garnered high praises from some really influential folks in music.

“Very inventive concept and excellent performance...” Laurence Juber

“In the genre of intriguing guitar players Trevor really stands out. His music is both soothing and challenging..."   Graham Nash

“Trevor is a virtuoso. I’ve never seen a guitarist/composer this good at his age”- Joe Nicolo Former President /Producer/Owner of Ruffhouse Records; found and signed Lauryn Hill, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, Kris Kross; produced James Taylor, Aerosmith.

We could go on and on with more reviews from bassist Michael Manring, Jazz great Pat Martino, percussionist Billy Cobham and Will Ackerman from the Windham Hill Label.

You’re going to want to say you saw him @ Trinity House Theatre in 2013 !!

Trevor will be sponsoring a 2 hour hands on guitar workshop at Trinity House at 3pm - 5pm the same day as the show.  Workshop fee is $40 and you can take $10 off your concert ticket if you attend the workshop.

Trace Bundy in Concert - Friday November 16th

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We would like to send a special thanks along to Eric Lugosch who gave an amazing performance last Saturday night at Trinity House.  Classic Americana music from Rev. Gary Davis to Joni Mitchell and his own compositions.  We don't know where this guy has been hiding all this time but he is a great teacher, has great chops and is pretty funny guy on stage. If you ever get chance to see Eric, don't pass it by.  His website has a 'Fingerstyle Academy www.ericlugosch.com/lessonhome.html, has lots of free (yes he admits he is a bad businessman) downloads.

Our next concert is Friday November 16th with the truly amazing Trace Bundy.  Back in 2008 Acoustic Guitar gave Trace the Most Promising New Talent Award ahead of the likes of Andy McKee and Macyn Taylor.  Called the 'Acoustic Ninja' for his forays into playing the guitar with multiple capos along with deft harmonics and occasional looping is a site to be seen and heard.

This is Trace's first concert here with MFGS and We expect this concert to sell out with over half of the 87 seats sold already. Go to www.fingerstyle.org and click on the link for tickets.

Show @ 8pm, doors at 7:30.  Tickets are $20 for general admission and $17 for Trinity House Members.

There is no guitar workshop for this show

Trinity House Theatre is located @ 38840 West Six Mile in Livonia.  For tickets go online to www.fingerstyle.org

Alert - Guitars Stolen from Local Music Store

  #

  Dear Friends of MFGS

Please pass this info along to whomever you know in the music world.  One of our good friends and long time supporters, Huber & Breese Music Store in Fraser Michigan had a theft of 5 guitars this week.  We all know folks in the music business who are trying to make a living in this economy and this can not be tolerated.

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Pricey-guitars-swiped-from-Fraser-music-store/-/1719418/13068548/-/uebcyhz/-/index.html

FRASER, MICH (WXYZ) - They're singing the blues today at Huber & Breese Music in Fraser.

Items valued at over $10,000 were taken in a late night robbery Wednesday.

The thief broke 2 windows trying to get into the store. Once inside, he chose 3 Gibson guitars, all Les Pauls. He also made off with a Fender Stratocaster guitar. But he didn't stop there. He took the whole cash register too, an antique 1896 National Cash Register.

Co-owner Judy Huber says, "Thank goodness no one was hurt."

Dear Friends of MFGS

We want to send out a huge THANK YOU!!!!  to California Guitar Trio’s Paul Richards, Hideyo Moriya and Bert Lams for a remarkably entertaining musical evening.  Listening to your cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’ after playing Bach is just an example of the amazing versatility you presented in last night’s performance.  World class guitarists and great guys to work with.  All the best from all of us in Michigan on your 20th year anniversary of CGT.   We saw Hideyo taking some pictures so we will keep in touch with you on your web site www.cgtrio.com and Hideyo’s web cam.

We also would like to thank Gary Zimnicki for bringing several of his beautiful hand built guitars.  Gary is from Allen Park so check out his site at www.zimnicki.com

Important note Someone left a very nice pair of prescription glasses in a case at the church.  So if you can read this note ;-) then don’t worry ….your glasses are not lost… they just have not yet been found!   Email us at  michfingerstyle@gmail.com or call the First United Church and we will figure out how to get these glasses to you.

California Guitar Trio This Saturday, November 5th. Update on their Guitar Workshop

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

The Board of MFGS wanted to take a moment to thank our friends at Detroit Guitar for sponsoring a very nice and energetic Fingerstyle Picking Party this past Sunday at their store.     http://birmingham.patch.com/articles/detroit-guitar-ready-to-rock-at-new-birmingham-store.

The big news though is our final concert of 2011 is with the

CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO

Saturday November 5th at the First United Methodist Church which is at

22331 Woodward , just south of 9 mile in Ferndale.

We have had the opportunity to meet them off an on over the years and saw them at the Ark in 2010 and asked if they would consider performing for MFGS.  They graciously said "well, we are not exactly fingerstyle performers but sure...we love Detroit" and now this is there second year at  MFGS.

General admission tickets are $25, doors open at 6:30 and performance starts at 7:30. Tickets are available here online

https://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?e=6bc4b4beac12a71dd421d59b1fad7a1c&t=tix  or you can also purchase them at the door.

As you read this information open up a second screen and listen to one of their compositions called 'The Marsh'

http://www.myspace.com/californiaguitartrio/music/songs/the-marsh-album-45497549

So, just a little bit about these guys you are about to see Saturday. Bert Lams graduated with a concert level degree in classical guitar studies from the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Brussels Belgium in 1984. Two years later he along with Paul Richards, who was studying guitar at the University of Utah and Hideyo Moriya from Toyko, who originally came to the States to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, met at a Guitar Craft seminar taught by legendary guitarist Robert Fripp.  “Robert introduced us to the New Standard Tuning, Based on fifths (C-G-D-A-E-G) using a steel string guitar with plectrum or pick,”.    In 1991 they started touring as the California Guitar Trio. The trio has released twelve albums: seven studio CDs featuring original CGT songs and a variety of other works spanning numerous genres, four live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music. Lams has also made a solo album of Bach preludes titled 'Nascent'. This will be an amazing concert with music ranging from classical to surf and from jazz to rock.

                                                                                          Important News

California Guitar Trio will be sponsoring a Guitar Workshop from 3pm -5pm the day of the show. This is for guitarists of all levels and it is a remarkable opportunity to spend 2 hours with the world renowned guitarists of CGT and then pick out your seats, watch sound check or grab a bite to eat before the show begins.

In 1991 Paul Richards (USA), Bert Lams (Belgium) & Hideo Moriya (Japan) created the California Guitar Trio (CGT) after initially meeting at Robert Fripp’s (King Crimson) Guitar Craft Course in 1987. The trio has toured worldwide since then frequently sharing the stage with Tony Levin (King Crimson). CGT has released 12 albums: 7 studio CDs featuring original CGT songs and a variety of other works spanning numerous genres, 4 live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music. Lams, who graduated with a concert level degree in classical guitar studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, has also made a solo album of Bach preludes titled ‘Nascent’.  Their 2010 release ‘Andromeda’ was named the Best CDs of 2010 in the instrumental category at the Indie Acoustic Project. CGT’s music was featured on television coverage for the 1998, 2000, 2002 & 2004 Olympics, they performed on the 2003 Grammy Award Show and they also provided wake up music for the crew of NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavor as it orbited Earth. Their music ranges all the way from King Crimson to Bach, fusing rock, blues, jazz, world music, progressive, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music. The California Guitar Trio's stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them an enthusiastic following and wide notoriety. You can’t miss this show!
