Change in Date for Picking Party - Other Events

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We are resending this newletter with a change in date information for our first of the fall season Picking Party @ Bluefish Music.  The Picking Party will now be held on Sunday October 21st from 3pm to 6pm.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.   Bluefish Guitar owner Paul Murphy has graciously opened up his shop for us to come to perform, network with other guitarists or  just listen to your fellow guitarist play.  What is important about these Picking Parties is that they are held in a very supportive and non competitive environment.  You just have to like the guitar to come by.   If need be remember that Paul does repairs also so if your guitar is limping a bit or or just needs a new set of strings then stop on by.  This gathering will be hosted by MFGS's own Dave Pierson.

744 Starkweather Street Plymouth, MI - (734) 927-0675 http://bluefishguitars.com/

Also ..here is some  local music that's coming up.

The Next Performance for MFGS is another US Fingerstlyle Champion, Eric Lugosch who will perform on Saturday night November 3rd @ Trinity House

Eric won in 1984 and he presents a truly original and inspirational Show. No gimmicks or gadgets, just a genuinely gifted imagination and a fluency that comes from years of working on his craft. Eric is an esteemed teacher of both beginner and advanced guitarists so this should be a great workshop to attend.

Fall Concert Series starts this Friday Sept 7th.

Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society

Presents in the opening night of our Fall Concert Series

Nicholas Barron

    This Friday, September 7th

Trinity House Theatre

Show Starts at 8 pm, Doors @ 7:30

Tickets Available At the Door!!

$20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members

Let’s see…....we noticed Nicholas when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008 and we wanted to bring him to our audience here.  Yes, he is not your typical fingerstylist but he sure can play a pretty mean guitar and he plays in a style that is truly his own; percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with his original one man band attack. His voice has been called a cross between Van Morrison and Joe Cocker

This is one of those performers that you may have not heard of before but everyone starts somewhere and besides playing in a Chicago band with famed guitarist Fareed Haque is no small potatoes!  Here is a list of performers who thought enough of Nicholas to ask him to open for them.  Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Buddy Guy. He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on.....

None of those performers who asked Nicholas to open have it wrong.  We can guarantee you that this will be a dynamic night of music!!!

C’mon out and see a something different at what has been called .....

Nicholas Barron

Show Starts at 8 pm, Doors @ 7:30 -   $20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members

Tickets will go on sale soon August 10th at www.fingerstyle.org

We first heard of Nicholas Barron when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008.  We were impressed then and kept him in mind for a future show. Although he is not your traditional fingerstylist he plays guitar in a style that is truly his own; percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with his original one man band attack.  His voice has been called a cross between Van Morrison and Joe Cocker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVuBLQnJVzI&feature=relmfu

Born in the U.S. Virgin Island and now hailing from Chicago. He was the son of a visual artist and a well known painter.  Nicholas started expressing his artistic talents through playing guitar at age 15.  In the summer of 1982 he attended Berklee college of Music and it changed his life forever. He spent some time at the New England Conservatory of Music and then transferred to the University of Cincinnati to study Jazz guitar where he admittedly got 'schooled' studying with Charlie Parker disciple, Jimmy McGarry.

After Cincinnati he ' busked' his way through Europe where he made the lifelong decision to make a living through signing and playing guitar.  Back in Chicago he started a band with Chicago guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque called '  Mind the Gap' and they headlined regularly at the Avalon where they shared a bill with the Smashing Pumpkins quite often.

In the 2000's Nicholas recorded a record with LA Mixer/producer Dave Way who has worked with the who's who of artists from Stevie Wonder, Ziggy Marley and Sheryl Crow. In January of 2007 , James Taylor introduced the Nicholas Barron Band as the launch artist for the New York Times Emerging Artists series at Joe's Pub in NYC. Taylor called Nicholas and the band's new CD "Undeniable". Soon after that Nicholas signed with Milwaukee YouTube record lable giant Candyrat Records www.candyrat.com

Nicholas has hopened for : Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Buddy Guy.  He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on.....

The California Guitar Trio is Paul Richards of Salt Lake City, Utah; Bert Lams of Affligem, Belgium; and Hideyo Moriya of Chiba, Japan. The trio first met in England in 1987 while studying with iconic King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. After touring together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists, the three guitarists convened in Los Angeles and founded The California Guitar Trio in 1991.

The CGT plays a unique style, with guitars weaving an intricate knot work of interlocking parts to form a whole. Richards, Lams, and Moriya can create music which sounds like it is performed on a kind of “super-piano” and at other times unfolds in an ethereal, otherworldly psychedelia. In space, CGT’s music was played to wake the astronauts aboard the NASA space shuttle “Endeavor”. Here on Earth, the trio’s music has been featured extensively on NPR, NBC’s Olympics coverage, and various CBS, CNN, and ESPN TV programs.

Born in New York, he first studied acoustic guitar with guitarist Reverend Gary Davis from 1968-1972.  Mann continued private lessons, focusing on improvisation with jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. Meanwhile, Mann received formal instruction at the Jullliard School’s pre-college program, then he finally returned to Juilliard to pursue post-baccalaureate studies in music performance and composition from 1975-76. In these early years, Mann played with guitarists John Fahey, Bukka White & Son House

Among guitarists and critics, Woody Mann is considered a modern master. While the blues are his touchstone, he seems to draw inspiration from every direction, blending a myriad influences with ease and grace.

October 1st Woody Mann in Ferndale

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Our fall concerts will be back at The First United Methodist Church in Ferndale Michigan.  For our first concert we will be featuring the American Guitar Legend Woody Mann on October 1st at 7:30 pm.  Guitarists will know him but for those who may not be familiar with him here is a quote you might like to read.

“Not only was he taught by the peerless guitar picker the Rev Gary Davis, but Mann has played with Son House, Bukka White and John Fahey and has studied jazz under the great Lennie Tristano. In between giving lessons to Paul Simon and accompanying Dori Previn, he has also managed to cut some dazzling music, both by himself and in collaboration with other performers.  Don’t miss a chance to see him; you are unlikely to hear anything- or anyone- better in the fields that Mann has chosen to master.”   THE LONDON TIMES

Thanks For Your Support and Don't Miss This Event!!!

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We would like to take a moment to thank you for your support in this our 10th season of presenting Fingerstyle Guitar concerts, workshops and picking parties.  Thanks to Mike Moss @ Callahan's for offering his venue for our concerts and to Pete who does the sound in the house. Can't forget our 'main man'  soundman extroidinare, Rick Ratcliff.

We would like to thank these truly amazing guitarists who came to the  Detroit Area to perform and teach Fingerstyle Guitar.  Preston Reed, Pierre Bensusan, Tony McManus, Stefano Barone, Craig D'Andrea, Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson, Ewan Dobson, California Guitar Trio (Bert Lams, Paul Richards & Hideo Moriya)  & International Guitar Night consisting of  Pino Forastiere, Brian Gore, Alexandre Gismonti and Clive Carrol.

More thanks to those that support our picking parties

Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music in Plymouth http://www.bluefishguitars.com/  ,

Tracey Ambrozy of Tracey's Cafe in Warren http://www.facebook.com/pages/Traceys-Corner-Cafe-owner/192336924110472,

Gordy Shelst of http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shelest-Music-Workshop/137302566303579  Shelest Music in St. Clair Shores.

Also a huge, huge thanks to Rob Poland of Candyrat Records http://www.candyrat.com/  for his support of our organization and his efforts in promoting guitar music and singer songwriters all over the world.

We cannot thank enough our dear friend and a fabulous supporter of Fingerstyle Music Pam Rossi of 'Overeasy'.  Sadly her show was cancelled and we certainly miss her and wish her well.  Music misses her too!

We still have Ann Delisi on WDET  http://www.wdet.org/shows/ann-delisis-essential-music/

and her cohort  host of Acoustic Cafe Rob Reinhart   http://www.acafe.com/about.html and Essential Music on WDET

Enjoy the summer and if your looking for a great guitar fix you cannot miss the Canadian Fingerstyle Festival coming up at the end of July.  It is a bit of a hike to get there but once you look at the lineup you'll think more than twice on whether to go there.   Click on this site and look through the amazing lineup and the location &  Hope to see you there !!!    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGEHJCIfOeY

On our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Michigan-Fingerstyle-Guitar-Society/145932971825  you can post if you are driving or looking for rides to the Canadian Festival.  Also VIA Rail leaves from Windsor (and other points in between) and considering the price of gas I think the rail line is pretty competetive.

MFGS Concert Update & Survey

  #

Please complete the following survey

 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Friends of MFGS

As you may know by now we have switched our venue to Callahan’s in Auburn Hills.  This was done for various reasons, partly due to the cost of the venue and also the work involved in tearing down the stage after the show. Being an all volunteer organization these were some of the factors that caused the change.

We also thought that Callahan’s offers an option of having dinner and drinks with friends prior to, or during the show.  The sound system at Callahan’s is very good and it is a fixed set up.  Both Rick Ratcliff from the Church and Pete at Callahan’s have received rave reviews from the performers so that was an even exchange. Although we raised ticket prices for 2 shows (California Guitar Trio & International Guitar Night due to the expense of multiple performers) our ticket prices have remained fixed at $20 and $15 for students and seniors.

As per our mission to promote Fingerstyle Guitar we pay all performers a  generous flat guaranteed fee and they receive a large percent of any money that is left over after the cost of the show/travel/hotels etc. MFGS does not make any money, in fact we have lost  money on most of our shows.

Now that we have had several performances under our belts at Callahan’s we would like your thoughts on our venue change and other thoughts you may have.  I will personally review all responses and all responding emails will have an opportunity to win one of 10 CD’s from various artists that have performed for us or some that our friend, Rob Poland, at Candyrat Records has donated to MFGS.   If you are not at our next show on April 16th then we will ship them to you at no cost.

This survey is meant for those who have attended one of our shows in the past, either at the First United Church, Callahan's or another venue. You may also complete the survey if you are considering attending a show in the future but please indicate that on the survey.

A synopsis of the responses will be posted after our next concert.

Please copy and paste the questions & your answers on to an email sent to

What city or zip code do you live in?

How many MFGS shows have you been to in the past?

Likes and dislikes about Callahan’s?  What would make you attend, or not attend a concert @ Callahan’s?  Is the fact that there is food and drinks a draw??

Likes and dislikes about First United Church?  What would make you attend, or not attend a concert @ the First United Church, or a similar type venue?

Is there a venue or location that you think would be better for MFGS?   Saying that, this means you would attend shows there!

Performers you would like to see at MFGS?

Do you think the pricing of our shows is fair?

If you attend picking parties sponsored by MFGS where is your favorite location or would you suggest a new one that you would attend.  Any other thoughts on picking parites.

If you have attended a guitar workshop sponsored by MFGS is there anything you would suggest we change, considering this is for guitarists of all levels.

Would you be willing to post flyers at local coffee shops, stores etc?

Would you like to be more involved with MFGS?

Any other thoughts or comments you would like to share?

Thanks for your support

Sincerely,

Ron Stavale

President, MFGS

INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT

We are anxiously awaiting our first concert of 2011 on Saturday January 29th @ 7:30PM.   We were so fortunate to be able to book the International Guitar Night tour for the first time.  We hope that you can make it out to Callahan's for this great concert.  Callahan's has info on their location @ http://www.atcallahans.com/.   Callahan's will open their doors @ 6pm for dinner and drinks so come out early, grab great seats and get ready for a fabulous night of great guitar music.

There is no formal guitar workshop prior to the concert because the guys come all the way from Milwaukee from a performance the night before.  If you have interest in a lesson from one of the guitarists we can talk to them about perhaps a small workshop or lessons on Sunday.  Call us if you have interest and we can discuss this with the musicians 248-646-4030.

The International Guitar Night (IGN) is the world's premier touring guitar festival originating in the year 2000. This is the 11th annual tour. Each show brings together some of the most interesting and innovative acoustic guitarists in the world to exchange musical ideas in a public concert setting performing solo and as a duet.

The tour this year includes Pino Forastiere from Rome, Italy.  Forastiere graduated with a degree in classical guitar from Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome.   After hearing Michael Hedges groundbreaking CD, Aerial Boundaries, Forastiere changed his approach to the acoustic guitar and is one of the most accomplished of todays contemporary fingerstyle guitarists. "He employs a dazzling blend of slapping, tapping,   strumming, altered tunings, and harmonics combined with classical phrasing and a focus on distinct and addictive melodies-  Guitar Player Magazine.

Next is Brazil's Alexandre Gismonti who is the son of legendary guitarist Egberto Gismonti.  He has received much critical praise in both Brazilian and foreign press.  In 2001 the Uruguayan newspaper Brecha wrote "The son of Egberto is a young guitar virtuoso. Alexandre's approach is very different from that of his father...he plays with an amazing interpretive authority.

Guitarist Clive Carroll hails from England. He was recently described as "the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain- Acoustic Guitar Magazine.  In 1999 Carroll was encouraged by John Renbourn (Pentangle) to record his first CD.  Carroll went on to become the only guitar player to ever win the Essex Young Musician of the Year Award.

Finally IGN founder Brian Gore is from San Francisco.  He is considered the 'Poet of the Guitar"  Gore's strong well developed melodies and intriguing chord sequences set him apart from the myriad of steel-string fingerstylists who compose in open tunings.  His finely crafted poetic “songs without words' takes the listener on a spellbinding emotional ride - Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

Tickets for this special event are $25 and you can link to online sales at www.fingerstyle.org

This will be a spectacular night of acoustic guitar music!

Self taught from childhood, initially through listening to the family record collection, McManus has come to be recognized throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music. From early childhood his twin obsessions of traditional music and acoustic guitar have worked together to produce a startlingly original approach to this ancient art. In Tony’s hands the complex ornamentation normally associated with fiddles and pipes are accurately transferred to guitar in a way that preserves the integrity and emotional impact of the music.  In 2002, McManus won twin “Musician of the Year” awards by the BBC Folks Awards and the Scottish Traditional Music Awards. Around the same time his CD, Ceol More gathered attention by being featured on the "Critic’s Album of the Year" list in Acoustic Guitar magazine, as well as being named “Live Ireland Awards' "Album of the Year."  In 2009, Tony became a Gold Medal winner when he won Acoustic Guitar magazine's reader's poll in the Celtic category. Other Gold Medal winners included Tommy Emmanuel, Doc Watson, John Jorgenson, John Williams, Paco de Lucía, and Tony Rice.
