Fall Concert Series starts this Friday Sept 7th.

Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society

Presents in the opening night of our Fall Concert Series

Nicholas Barron

    This Friday, September 7th

Trinity House Theatre

Show Starts at 8 pm, Doors @ 7:30

Tickets Available At the Door!!

$20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members

Let’s see…....we noticed Nicholas when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008 and we wanted to bring him to our audience here.  Yes, he is not your typical fingerstylist but he sure can play a pretty mean guitar and he plays in a style that is truly his own; percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with his original one man band attack. His voice has been called a cross between Van Morrison and Joe Cocker

This is one of those performers that you may have not heard of before but everyone starts somewhere and besides playing in a Chicago band with famed guitarist Fareed Haque is no small potatoes!  Here is a list of performers who thought enough of Nicholas to ask him to open for them.  Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Buddy Guy. He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on.....

None of those performers who asked Nicholas to open have it wrong.  We can guarantee you that this will be a dynamic night of music!!!

C’mon out and see a something different at what has been called .....

Thanks For Your Support and Don't Miss This Event!!!

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We would like to take a moment to thank you for your support in this our 10th season of presenting Fingerstyle Guitar concerts, workshops and picking parties.  Thanks to Mike Moss @ Callahan's for offering his venue for our concerts and to Pete who does the sound in the house. Can't forget our 'main man'  soundman extroidinare, Rick Ratcliff.

We would like to thank these truly amazing guitarists who came to the  Detroit Area to perform and teach Fingerstyle Guitar.  Preston Reed, Pierre Bensusan, Tony McManus, Stefano Barone, Craig D'Andrea, Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson, Ewan Dobson, California Guitar Trio (Bert Lams, Paul Richards & Hideo Moriya)  & International Guitar Night consisting of  Pino Forastiere, Brian Gore, Alexandre Gismonti and Clive Carrol.

More thanks to those that support our picking parties

Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music in Plymouth http://www.bluefishguitars.com/  ,

Tracey Ambrozy of Tracey's Cafe in Warren http://www.facebook.com/pages/Traceys-Corner-Cafe-owner/192336924110472,

Gordy Shelst of http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shelest-Music-Workshop/137302566303579  Shelest Music in St. Clair Shores.

Also a huge, huge thanks to Rob Poland of Candyrat Records http://www.candyrat.com/  for his support of our organization and his efforts in promoting guitar music and singer songwriters all over the world.

We cannot thank enough our dear friend and a fabulous supporter of Fingerstyle Music Pam Rossi of 'Overeasy'.  Sadly her show was cancelled and we certainly miss her and wish her well.  Music misses her too!

We still have Ann Delisi on WDET  http://www.wdet.org/shows/ann-delisis-essential-music/

and her cohort  host of Acoustic Cafe Rob Reinhart   http://www.acafe.com/about.html and Essential Music on WDET

Enjoy the summer and if your looking for a great guitar fix you cannot miss the Canadian Fingerstyle Festival coming up at the end of July.  It is a bit of a hike to get there but once you look at the lineup you'll think more than twice on whether to go there.   Click on this site and look through the amazing lineup and the location &  Hope to see you there !!!    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGEHJCIfOeY

On our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Michigan-Fingerstyle-Guitar-Society/145932971825  you can post if you are driving or looking for rides to the Canadian Festival.  Also VIA Rail leaves from Windsor (and other points in between) and considering the price of gas I think the rail line is pretty competetive.

MFGS Concert Update & Survey

  #

Please complete the following survey

 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Friends of MFGS

As you may know by now we have switched our venue to Callahan’s in Auburn Hills.  This was done for various reasons, partly due to the cost of the venue and also the work involved in tearing down the stage after the show. Being an all volunteer organization these were some of the factors that caused the change.

We also thought that Callahan’s offers an option of having dinner and drinks with friends prior to, or during the show.  The sound system at Callahan’s is very good and it is a fixed set up.  Both Rick Ratcliff from the Church and Pete at Callahan’s have received rave reviews from the performers so that was an even exchange. Although we raised ticket prices for 2 shows (California Guitar Trio & International Guitar Night due to the expense of multiple performers) our ticket prices have remained fixed at $20 and $15 for students and seniors.

As per our mission to promote Fingerstyle Guitar we pay all performers a  generous flat guaranteed fee and they receive a large percent of any money that is left over after the cost of the show/travel/hotels etc. MFGS does not make any money, in fact we have lost  money on most of our shows.

Now that we have had several performances under our belts at Callahan’s we would like your thoughts on our venue change and other thoughts you may have.  I will personally review all responses and all responding emails will have an opportunity to win one of 10 CD’s from various artists that have performed for us or some that our friend, Rob Poland, at Candyrat Records has donated to MFGS.   If you are not at our next show on April 16th then we will ship them to you at no cost.

This survey is meant for those who have attended one of our shows in the past, either at the First United Church, Callahan's or another venue. You may also complete the survey if you are considering attending a show in the future but please indicate that on the survey.

A synopsis of the responses will be posted after our next concert.

Please copy and paste the questions & your answers on to an email sent to

What city or zip code do you live in?

How many MFGS shows have you been to in the past?

Likes and dislikes about Callahan’s?  What would make you attend, or not attend a concert @ Callahan’s?  Is the fact that there is food and drinks a draw??

Likes and dislikes about First United Church?  What would make you attend, or not attend a concert @ the First United Church, or a similar type venue?

Is there a venue or location that you think would be better for MFGS?   Saying that, this means you would attend shows there!

Performers you would like to see at MFGS?

Do you think the pricing of our shows is fair?

If you attend picking parties sponsored by MFGS where is your favorite location or would you suggest a new one that you would attend.  Any other thoughts on picking parites.

If you have attended a guitar workshop sponsored by MFGS is there anything you would suggest we change, considering this is for guitarists of all levels.

Would you be willing to post flyers at local coffee shops, stores etc?

Would you like to be more involved with MFGS?

Any other thoughts or comments you would like to share?

Thanks for your support

Sincerely,

Ron Stavale

President, MFGS

Coloring his music with influences from his travels, critically-acclaimed guitarist & composer Rick Udler's playing is enriched with a lively mix of Brazilian rhythm, American blues and jazz, and even overtones of funk and ragtime.

The excitement of the Interlochen Guitar Institute's inaugural in August 2006 is only exceeded by the amazing success and growth that has resulted in our expanded second year's offering. With twice as many classical and jazz masters on the faculty providing significantly more offerings in those areas, and the presence of acoustic giant Leo Kottke spearheading the acoustic guitar concert series, we have added a rock and blues faculty that includes members of the bands of Kid Rock, Kenny Loggins, The Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estafan and Son Seals. With them on board we have scheduled courses in blues, rock, slide, recording, arranging, music business and world music to complement our courses in technique, reading, scale visualization, flamenco, instrument construction and instrument maintenance.

Update on the Motor City Boogie Woogie & Blues Festival

Motor City Boogie Woogie & Blues Fest Shakes It Up

FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH., SEPT. 7, 2005 The 7th annual Motor City Boogie Woogie & Blues Festival is double the pleasure. This year’s concert has more twists and turns than ever.

Promoters are returning the concert to the Royal Oak Music Theatre, for a twin bill on Fri. Oct. 14 and Sat., Oct. 15. Doors open at 7 pm, show at 8 pm, both nights. The concert was last held at ROMT in 2001, as a 9-11 firefighter tribute. It later moved to Detroit’s Historic Redford Theatre.

Changing venues and broadening the scope of the concert are just two big news facts. “It’s a fascinating spot for this new concert series – lots of seating options, great parking and wonderful street ambiance that our boogie-and blues crowd likes,” said local entrepreneur and businessman Ron Harwood of the venue change. Harwood is president and founder of Farmington Hills-based American Music Research Foundation and the internationally known design firm Illuminating Concepts. The festival has been his brainchild since the first concert was held seven years ago at Ferndale’s Magic Bag. AMRF is the festival producer; and DaimlerChrysler continues as the major sponsor for the third year.

For the first time, the increasingly popular concert venue is adding a second night. Friday night’s show spotlights pure boogie woogie roots artists. Michael Kaeshammer, Toronto keyboard wiz and audience fave, headlines the Boogie night. Missing in action for two years, Kaeshammer has been gathering international awards and recording new material. The supporting boogie cast includes keyboard sensation Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne, from Vancouver; international artists Philippe LeJeune from Toulouse, France and sensation in the making Silvan Zingg from Manno-Lugano, Switzerland.

Saturday night’s concert features “Gen 2 Blues”. Second generation blues performers are those who follow in their parent’s footsteps. The big news is the appearance of Jackson 5 star Tito Jackson who shows the Detroit audience his blues side! Tito is a phenomenal blues player who learned in his formative years from his dad and then while in Detroit recording for Motown.

Also look for the Phantom Blues Band, who have backed up Taj Mahal and are part of the Blues Brothers touring band; also Bernard Allison (Luther Allison’s son); and Kenny Neal, offspring of blues harmonica legend Raful Neal; Tasha Taylor, whose fabled father, Johnnie Taylor, is known as The Wailer.

Both shows will be taped for national broadcast on PBS and their 350 affiliates.

The festival will pay tribute to Johnny Johnson, former Chuck Berry keyboard virtuoso, who died in April. Proceeds also will benefit the American Music Research Foundation, a 503-C non-profit which assists needy musicians. Donations also will be accepted for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Tickets are $35; at tickets.com. Or call 800-919-6272. Tickets also are available at the ROMT box office through Oct. 15. A cash bar and adjacent parking are available.
