Jake Allen - Friday March 29th-Trinity House Theatre

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

MFGS is an 501 (3) (c) non profit society promoting the art of fingerstyle guitar.  Now in our 18th season and we have hosted well over 120 concerts in Southeast Michigan.

We always love bringing in new 'finds' (it's actually part of our mission!) to you such as

Andy McKee in 2006, Pino Forastiere in 2007 & Guitar Republic in 2010 as well as our (you and MFGS) favorites - The California Guitar Trio, Laurence Juber, Don Ross, Calum Graham, Tony McManus,  Luca Stricagnoli, Pat Donohue, & Stefano Barone!!

Now we have the pleasure of bringing you one of the young guns of fingerstyle guitar

Michigan's own

Jake Allen!!!!

Friday March 29th

Jake is currently on his US tour and we are fortunate that he will be passing through Southeast Michigan.

Doors at 7:30 & show is at 8pm

2 sets and an intermission

Tickets are $20 and now available at www.fingerstyle.org

Trinity House Theatre is located at
38840 West Six Mile
Livonia - 734-464-6302

www.trinityhousetheatre.org

At a young age Allen began exploring synthesizers and recording music in his father’s Northern Michigan studio. By his late teens, Allen found himself being drawn to the sounds of finger-style guitar trailblazers like Michael Hedges and Andy McKee. He started to pinpoint his focus on acoustic guitar, crafting his own breed of six string wizardry. On top of a two-hands on the neck, percussive tapping style, Jake employed an array of effects and live looping to create an engaging solo performance.

Jake is an amazing fingerstylist and recently toured with the Accidentals.  We really want you to get a chance to see someone who may follow the path of the above mentioned giants of the guitar world!

Part of our mission is to bring new and upcoming guitarists to you

So here is Jake Allen!!

https://vimeo.com/242405156

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EPHUoAxyto&feature=youtu.be

and although he is not with his band, we might bring them all back for your listening pleasure

Update on 20 Front Street Concert- A Great Venue to see Stefano Barone

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Spring is upon us.  Come on out to one of the nicest venues in the Midwest;

20 Front Street!

They have a cafe with nice snacks and Kambucha along with Ray's ice cream

and of course on this Friday April 13th they have

from Rome Italy - Stefano Barone

at 20 Front Street this Friday, April 13th

wsg Stuart and OldSkool Sunny.

Address is the same as the venue

20 Front Street in Lake Orion -  248-783-7105

Tickets are $18 and available online http://20frontstreet.com/event/stefano-barone/

  or at the door.

There has been a time change in his appearance;

Show starts at 8pm - Doors are at 7:30

As more film directors hear his music you will see his name in the credits of future movies!

Wouldn't it be nice to say you saw him when he was at 20 Front Street in 2018!!

Barone has just completed a good portion of his tour performing in the Upper Peninsula, Petoskey, Livonia and Lansing along with a masterclass at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Currently he is in Milwaukee hosting a masterclass for the students of 'Peck School of the Arts'

Barone's performances interweave his own compositions such as 'The Cure' and 'Us' in-between re-arrangments of Bjork's 'Human Behavior' and Philip Glass's 'Facades'  The response to his performances has been overwhelming with offers to use his music in films and appearances at festivals.

Having performed for years as a world class acoustic guitarist Stefano has embarked upon a very exploratory  approach to his compositions.  The music that he wants to create takes more than a guitar.   With the use of a multitrack machine and a 10 and 6 stringed guitar and an adaption to change one guitar into a modified cello.

Here is a brief  a powerfully haunting piece called  'The Cure'

https://www.facebook.com/stefbarone/videos/10213528015266416/

This will probably be Billy's 5th or 6th performance for MFGS.  We've hosted him before his near career stopping near paralysis and his remarkable decision to switch from a right handed guitar player to a left handed player just so he could play the music he wrote.  It's a remarkable story and he is a remarkable performer.

Although the trio won't be with Billy we thought you'd enjoy this lovely piece.

Nationally acclaimed acoustic guitarist Richard Gilewitz defies easy categorization: one minute he'll be picking sophisticated Bach-like melodies, and the next minute he'll be getting down in a raw Delta blues song. His repertoire covers everything from the afore-mentioned classical and blues to folk, jazz and rock. Tickets available for Ian Ethan Case -Saturday May 14th

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

In fulfilling our non-profit mission of promoting fingerstyle guitar we bring in newer artists to this area as well as your favorite established artists.  On May 14th we are bringing in Ian Ethan Case to this area for the first time.  Ian has received rave reviews from wherever he has performed.

“Few musicians tackle the challenging double-neck guitar, and perhaps few have done it with the intellectual intensity and skill of Ian Ethan Case. Case’s inventive multi-layered compositions are like nothing you’ve heard before. His new album, Run Toward The Mountains, is both meditative and commanding.” — The Christian Science Monitor

Take a few minutes to consider coming out to see someone new, someone you've not seen before and someone making an impact in the world of music!  These performers get pennies on their online downloads and they really need your support to continue to produce such great music. Our friends at Candyrat Records www.candyrat.com have a few CDs to raffle off so c'mon out and you might just get lucky twice!  Once would be seeing Ian Ethan Case….twice would be taking home a free Candyrat CD!

Ian Ethan Case
Saturday May 14th @ Trinity House Theatre
$20 general admission and $17 for Trinty House Members
Doors at 7:30 and show at 8pm.  We will start a few minutes later to let folks who are coming from a distance to get there.

You can pre purchase tickets at www.fingerstyle.org or at the door.

10 Years ago we brought in a young guitarist with really long hair and mismatched sneakers.  Maybe 30 folks came out to see him in our old venue in Ferndale.   Here is an actual quote from our newsletter at the time!  " On Saturday, February 11th, 2006 at 7:30 pm the Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society presents one of today's finest young fingerstyle guitarists, Andy McKee.  Andy is hailed by many musicians in the acoustic world as the most promising fingerstyle guitarist to arrive on the scene in some time".  Now we cannot even book the guy!  Incidentally he is coming to town on Sunday June 19th and we will send more info in the next newsletter.

Regarding Ian's concert.  Please remember that there is some roadwork on 275 from 696 south to 5 mile road.  If coming from the northeast probably take the Southfield expressway to I-96 and go to I-275 and go north  to 6mile and Trinity House is just left turn off the xway.  If coming from the west then get off at Novi and drop down to  6 mile.  From the north you might just go west to Novi and drop down.  Here is a map.

Stefano Barone performing in Ann Arbor - Detroit

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

First of all we would like to thank Maneli Jamal for a fantastic concert on March 19th. His thematic music was interwoven with the stories of his life and how he and his music got to this point!  Thanks Maneli and come back again!

Now for the music!

Italy's Stefano Barone is one of the most creative contemporary fingerstylists performing today. He is touring Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and then out to New Mexico with our good friend Michael Chapdelaine.

8pm Wednesday April 6th @ Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor
 415 N 4th Ave, Ann Arbor, Phone:(734) 769-2999

Tickets are available through Kerrytown's web site and they range from $5 for students up to $25 for front row seats  http://www.kerrytownconcerthouse.com/  Come out and support this great venue and we may be able to bring more fingerstyle guitar out that way!

Stefano will be in Michigan for a while and he will also be performing at the Detroit Institute of Arts Film Theater for the Detroit Freep Press Film Festival on Sunday April 3rd at 3:30pm.  Stefano's music was chosen to be the backdrop of video journalist Brian Kaufman's new film called Predator/Prey: The Fight for Isle Royale Wolves. Brian has asked Stefano to perform a short set of music just prior to the world premier of the film.  Tickets are $10 for the double feature movie on Michigan's National Park and Stefano's music is just a bonus. http://www.dia.org/auxiliaries/event.aspx?id=5622&iid=6762&aux_id=14&cid=100

If you recall Brian Kaufman used the music of the trio Stefano performs with, 'Guitar Republic', for his stunning film on Detroit's infamous Packard Plant at the film festival in 2014. Take a moment and enjoy this trailer (big screen/good speakers) of that film to see how Brian weaves in poetry, music & film http://freepfilmfestival.com/schedule-of-films/packard-the-last-shift/

Also for you guitarists out there Stefano will be teaching a free 2 hr masterclass at Oakland University on Tuesday April 5th at 5:30 pm in room 134 at Varner Hall on campus.  You are welcome to come out at the invite of guitar instructor extraordinaire Bret Hoag.  Information can be obtained by clicking on this Facebook  event  https://www.facebook.com/events/164996220556287/  If you have any questions on this event you can post them on the Facebook page and don't forget to pass this on to guitar friends who might be interested.  I did say it was free, didn't I?

Stefano will be performing on this Thursday March 31st at the International Center for Creativity 1266 Manning Parkway in Powell Ohio, just north of Columbus. There will be a 'Meet and Greet' just before the concert so check this out if you're in the area and pass this down to your guitar friends in Ohio. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/live-at-the-icc-stefano-barone-composer-recording-artist-fingerstyle-guitarist-extraordinaire-tickets-22655390884

He will also be touring other Michigan cities like the Orpheum in Hancock on April 7th, Federation of Women's Club on April 8th in Marquette,  William Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba on April 9th,  St. Andrews Church in Big Rapids on April 14th The Red Sky Stage in Petosky on April 15th and finally at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation Hall in Traverse City on April 16th.  Please link onto Stefano's web site for more information, www.stefbarone.com and pass this info on to your friends up north!  You can also email michfingerstyle@gmail.com for other info   & questions

Also Stefano will be conducting 2 private masterclasses at the Detroit Institute of Music Education (DIME) in Downtown Detroit on April 13th. DIME http://www.dime-detroit.com/  DIME has an interesting story and thelanded in Detroit and will be an important aspect  of Detroit's Revitalization.

MFGS would like to thank a few special folks for our ability to continue to bring in world class guitarists to this area.  First of all Bill Keith and all the volunteers at  Trinity House www.trinityhousetheatre.org. You can help keep Trinity House Going by volunteering there or just attending some of their concerts.

Ann Delisi of WDET's Essential Music http://wdet.org/shows/ann-delisis-essential-music/. Her dedication to music and the arts (even the art of cooking) is unparalleled and all of our performers that are interviewed on her show are so impressed by how comfortable she makes them feel and they always say 'she knows music!

Brian Galloup and Sam Guidry of Galloup Guitars in Big Rapids http://www.galloupguitars.com/ for sponsoring a great free concert at St. Andrews Church in Big Rapids.

Also a very special thanks to Seamus Shinners of Connermara Concerts in Traverse City for working so hard to keep live music coming up to the Northern Michigan Area http://www.northernexpress.com/michigan/article-895-seamus-shinners-the-man-behind-the-music.html

As well as our friends at Candyrat Records www.candyratrecords.com
& also Minor 7th magazine    www.minor7th.com for the latest reviews of this great music.

And of course ...thanks to you for continuing to support the venues and the organizations that bring live music to you!

  #
Dear Friends of MFGS

True to our mission of supporting the art of Fingerstyle Guitar MFGS is proud to present Maneli Jamal on Saturday March 19th for his first Detroit area appearance!

Maneli's music is very thematic and distinctive as it has been woven together with his remarkable technical ability and the story of his incredibly difficult nomadic life. Born in Iran, Maneli fled with his family and traveled through 5 different countries before settling in the Toronto area.

Saturday, March 19th @ Trinity House Theatre

Spring 2016 Concert Series and other Events

  #
Dear Friends of MFGS

All of us here at MFGS wish you much happiness and health in this New Year.

Before we present our Spring Series we would like you to know about an important concert in Ann Arbor. St. Andrews has provided breakfast for anyone who needs it and one of their most important fundraisers is this event put on by Acoustic Routes http://breakfastatstandrews.org/breakfest-2016.htm
  • Doors Open: 7:00 pm
  • Show Starts: 7:30 pm
  • Ticket Price: $30
  • -------------------------------------

For this Spring Concert Series we are featuring 3 performances and  2 of the guitarist are performing with MFGS for the first time!   Talk about world influences, we are hosting a guitarist born in Italy, one from Croatia and one from Iran!  On Saturday March 19th at Trinity House Theatre we are hosting Maneli Jamal.  Maneli has quite a diverse background having lived in 5 different countries and moved 20 times before he was 18.  His compositions are very unique and blend his incredible technical skill woven with the history of his families nomadic journey. Here is 'Movement 1 - Awakening' from his CD 'Lamaj Movement' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyjLVUdFNV0.

Maneli has received many accolades from audiences and guitarists alike and he was named one of the '30 Great Guitarists Under 30' by Acoustic Guitar Magazine along with MFGS friends Trevor Gordon Hall and Calum Graham.

"Jamal shows his mastery of phrasing, a sumptuous tone, and an ability to wrest emotion from every note, even from the pauses between the notes." Minor 7th - Céline Keating

"Maneli Jamal is an upcoming star and is writing some powerful music with a personal narrative that is compelling and meaningful."  -Andrew York, Grammy Award Winning Guitarist

Tickets are $20 and $17 for Trinity House Members.  Doors at 7:30 and show at 8pm.

    ---------------------------------------------

On Wednesday April 6th MFGS is hosting an amazing guitarist at from Italy Stefano Barone. This performance will be at Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor.  Barone, born in Naples, moved to Rome and studied with Pino Forastiere and signed with our friends at Candyrat Records www.candyrat.com.  Stefano has accomplished some amazing feats by having over nearly 5 million views of his compositions on Youtube.  The depth and originality of his music is unmatched.

Here is one of Stefano's most recent pieces from his CD 'Danze Altalenanze' called 'Altalenanze'   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3YE8iWjkCA

"Michael Hedges would have been proud that his legacy has been so transformed into the new Millennium by such luminaries as Stefano Barone"   - Minor 7th - Alan Fark

Tickets will be on sale soon at Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor -  http://www.kerrytownconcerthouse.com/

    -----------------------------------------------

Finally, take a guitarist who was born in Croatia and at age 12 entered one of the most prestigious music schools in Europe 'Mozarteum' in Salzburg where he studied under such famed guitarists such as Eliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch.  Then after years of performing on his Richard Brune nylon string guitar, mix him with a drummer and bass player in Chicago and you have the Goran Ivanovic Trio!  The Goran Ivanovic Trio will perform at Trinity House Theatre in Livonia on Saturday May 14th.

Although this is a bit of a reach for our typical solo fingerstyle guitarists performances you will find yourself listening to a refreshing jazzy, Latin, Eastern European sound on this night.

      #

    Dear Friends of MFGS

This is our last concert of 2016!

This is an opportunity to see one of the legends of fingerstyle guitar in an intimate setting.  Billy McLaughlin emerged back in the Michael Hedges era as one of the preeminent fingerstylists in the world and his Album 'Fingerdance' reached Billboard's Top Ten Chart.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Lr79aMTYPc

Saturday November 21st. Tickets are $25 , Door at 7:30 Concert at 8pm.

    Tickets available at www.fingerstyle.org

Billy will be accompanied by his good friend Jeff Arundel.

This concert will be at 'The Barn' in Rochester Hills by Walton and S. Adams just east of Meadowbrook.  The Barn is just what it is....A Barn that has been repurposed into office space but has room for about 40 folks.

Since this is a private residence the venue address will be on the ticket.

You may have heard that due to focal dystonia, Billy has had to relearn using the guitar by switching hands.......an incredible difficult feat for someone of that level of performing.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_8EV1KzWOY

You'll have an opportunity to meet Billy and Jeff after the show and you can bring a drink of your choice to the concert.

Update on Pat Donohue's Concert and Workshop.

      #

    Dear Friends of MFGS

Just to let you know that there are a couple dozen tickets still available for Pat Donohue’s concert this coming Saturday, September 26th at Trinity House Theatre in Livonia.  We can’t stress enough on what a great guitarists and entertainer that Pat Donohue is.  Maybe another quote would help sway you to come out and see one of America’s great guitarists.

His playing is rich with active, nimble bass lines that would in themselves seem to give a guitarist plenty to do. Laid against them are the complex chord work and elaborate, deftly-executed single-note runs. It's about as much harmonious sound as can be produced by two hands, wood, and strings...”Los Angeles Times

And Just as important!  We get questions on why we don’t have any more guitar workshops?  MFGS took a break from sponsoring concerts for a while and along with that we backed off of the guitar workshops.  Pat Donohue asked if we would sponsor one of his workshops and he is one of the preeminent guitar teachers in the world! This is an opportunity for guitarists of all levels to sit with him for 2 hours, watch him perform, have him watch you play, learn some theory, learn some licks, ask any questions that you want and then get $10 off his concert ticket price!  Sounds like a deal to me!

We had posted our old number 248-646-4030 and there seems to have been a glitch in signing up so if you tried to call and didn’t’ get through here is a new number and an email address.  We do need a minimum of 4-5 guitarists so call or text 248-953-6223 or email michfingerstyle@gmail.com.   Guitar workshop is at Trinity House from 3-5 pm and you can pick the best seats for the show and then take a break and come back for the show.

2 Hour Guitar workshop is $40 and you then get $10 off of the concert ticket price.
