Last MFGS Show for 2016 Spring Series

Friends of MFGS

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, our good guitar loving friends at Minor 7th sent us a link and said "book this guy if you can".  We checked him out ..... found open night and did just that!

We booked Ian Ethan Case for Saturday May 14th at Trinity House Theatre.   Show starts at 8, doors are 7:30. Tickets are $20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members.  Tickets available at

We consider ourselves friends so we are telling you "go see this guy!".  It is so nice to hear about and to go see someone perform who you have not heard of and who's approach to the guitar is refreshingly new and amazing! We probably won't be able to book him for 2 or 3 years, if that!  By then you might have to fight be able to get tickets to see him.

In January 2013 Ian was invited to perform with some of the world’s foremost guitarists and bass players as part of Muriel Anderson’s "All-Star Guitar Night" at the annual NAMM convention in Anaheim CA, where he shared the stage with Robben Ford, Victor Wooten, and Stanley Jordan, among others. Since then he has gone on to perform with some of the most respected artists in his genre, including solo bass icon Michael Manring and Grammy Award-winning reed player Paul McCandless (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Oregon), as well as top-notch classical musicians from the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.

The accolades for Ian are endless.  Here are a few more.

“...a style beyond even the great double-neckers like Jimmy Page and Richie inventively new vein of guitar playing.” “It’s entrancing to he rambunctiously weaves between fret boards, slapping and tapping the sounds of the guitar to life seemingly effortlessly in a style that you’ve likely never seen before.” -Bill Mickelson - Port Orchard Independent (WA)

The results of his exploration are stunning, beautiful, moving and prepared to hear something like you’ve never heard before, to venture into wild and uncharted territory.” -Jen O’Callaghan - Nashua Telegraph / Encore / Granite Sounds (Nashua, NH)

" A sonic feast, an epic journey both aurally and conceptually....Each piece is a mini-symphony that holds the attention fully. Run toward the Mountains is a major achievement which is sure to confirm Case amongh the ranks of significant artists at work today!"   -    Minor 7th

Don't Miss This Show with Ian Ethan Case! You Won't Be Disappointed!

Again, Stefano Barone would like to thank all the folks who helped make his tour  tour a huge success. Special thanks to Brian Kaufman who chose Stefano's music to back his beautiful and important film "The Eye of The Wolf' which was featured at the Detroit Free Press Film Festival, . Thanks to Bret Hoag and the folks at Oakland University's Music Department and also Paul Schauert and the folks at D.I.M.E. for inviting Stefano in to talk to the guitar students.   Also the Marquette Federation of Women's Club,  Christina Carlin at the Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba, Marty Scott at The Red Sky Stage in Petoskey, Patti Barrow at The Section House in Little Lakes Michigan, Mike and Joelle at The Orpheum in Hancock, Bryan Galloup and his gang at Galloup Guitars in Big Rapids, Jim Stevenson and his group at the International Center for Creativity, Abby & Allison at Kerrytown Concerts in Ann Arbor and the folks at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Traverse City! A very special thanks to Seamus Shinners of Connermara Concerts in Traverse City for working so hard to keep live music coming up to the Northern Michigan

Support the folks who help bring this music to you!
Check out our friends at Candyrat Records
& also Minor 7th magazine for the latest reviews of this great music.

Still Some tickets left for Michael Chapdelaine - March 29th @ Trinity House

Michael Chapdelaine

Saturday March 29th

  Trinity House Theatre

With Special Guest - Yemen Al-Rawi

Part of the mission of MFGS is to promote the art of fingerstyle guitar.  How better can we do this then to offer the stage to one of our up an coming young guitarists.  Yemen has been a loyal follower of MFGS for 4 or 5 years now.  Come on out and see who might be doing a solo show in a few years!

Trinity House Theatre  38840 West Six Mile
Livonia - 734-464-6302  Doors @ 7:30pm -Concert @ 8pm

Tickets $20 Available at

There are still some tickets left for Michael Chapdelaine's concert.  Not to be redundant but Michael is the only guitarist ever (like in the whole world) to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres.

Chapdelaine earned the distinction of winning the 20th annual National Fingerpicking Championship, traditionally dominated by steel string players, while playing on a nylon string classical guitar. In the 80's and 90's Chapdelaine proved himself to be one of the world’s finest classical guitarists; twice winning the coveted National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant, and taking First Prize in both the Guitar Foundation of America's and the Music Teachers National Association's Guitar Competitions.

His teachers included the great Spanish maestro Andres Segovia .

Michael will appear on Ann Delisi's Essential Music on WDET's 101.9 at about 12 noon on March 29th.

He recently signed with Candyrat Records and here is one of his original pieces recently posted on YouTube

Michael Chapdelaine's Guitar Workshop

Michael will host a 2 hour guitar workshop from 3pm to 5pm the same day as the show. The cost of the workshop is $40 and the workshop attendees will receive a $10 discount to the concert and a choice of a great variety of Candyrat Records CD 's provided by Rob Poland of Candyrat Records

Michael is Professor of Music and head of guitar studies at the University of New Mexico, and has previously been on the faculties of the University of Colorado at Denver and Metropolitan State University.  He has given master classes throughout the world including, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Peru, Venezuela, Taiwan, Indonesia and at institutions such as, University of Miami, Mannes School of Music, University of Texas, and California State University.

Here is an opportunity to spend 2 hours with one of the most acclaimed guitarists in the world! This is for guitarists of all levels and Michael promises to treat everyone nicer than Segovia did to him at one of the Master Classes!

Fisher Music Center!   Oh ya!  ITS FOR FREE!!  And there are 2 SHOWS  But you have to get there early cause parking is tight. Go downtown early, grab a bite to eat and then go to the concert !

The DSO & MidtownDetroit, Inc. present two 45-minute performances of the California Guitar Trio with the Montreal Guitar Trio.

Shows at 7:00-7:45     &    8:15-9:00 p.m.

Not sure where to start with this one but we are feeling Really BLUE!   L.

Our dear friend and big time MFGS supporter Paul Murphy is ending part of his BlueFish Music commercial venture.  It’s hard to run a store, spend time with customers, do repairs , provide lessons and not end up working 16 hours a day.  Hard to keep up with your kids that way!

Paul will be eliminating the commercial side of his store and Starting Next Week he will be having a huge sale on all of the inventory at Bluefish Music! Paul has more than stocking stuffers too!!

Stop by or call and let Paul help you find something nice for the guitarist in your life! All sorts of guitars from acoustic to electric to bass to mandolin to ukulele!  Pickups, amplifiers, strings, books, capos, picks …. and anything else having to do with guitars.  This is the end of a 10 year adventure for Paul.

Paul is not totally gone since  he will still do guitars repairs and have a studio for lesson  out of Bluefish.   Paul is a great guy and so we wish him well.

Do stop by and get a great deal on some nice stuff.  Keep him in mind for  future lessons or guitar setups or repairs. We all would trust our guitar repairs with Paul!    All the best Paul!!

Here is a Great Idea for a stocking stuffer for your guitarist!

One of our MFGS friends, Trevor Gordon Hall (he performed here in Feb. 2013), is going to record with Windham Hill founder/guitarist Will Ackerman.

In order to help finance this amazing opportunity he has created some great deals for us.  How about for $50 you can get 2 of his signed CDs, one of them is the one he is working on with Will Ackerman and also a 30 minute skype guitar lesson!  For $100 you get 2, 45 min skype lessons or 4 tickets to a show near you (yes he will play in Detroit in the future) Also you get 4 CD’s, one of them is their combined CD, one is Will’s and 2 are Trevor’s.  Trevor has received great accolades from those who have seen him and even Michael Chapdelaine (the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres) and Michael Manring (bassist who played with Michael Hedges)  who is one of, if not,  the best bass guitarist in the world; both have great things to say about Trevor.   Check out Trevor’s site and you will really surprise any guitarist you know!  You can go from $15 up to $5,000 and this is a win-win deal!!!   Check this out !

And another Great Idea from one of our big time supporters and friend of MFGS , Rob Poland of Candyrat Records.  Pick out some of the CDs of his great stable of musicians at

Another idea is Candyrat’s Limited Edition flash drive with 100 of their top recordings for only $50.

Picking Party October 30th - CGT Concert November 5th

California Guitar Trio

Saturday November 5th

Show starts at 7:30 pm. Doors at 6:30

First United Methodist Church – In Ferndale

22331 Woodward Ave. – Just south of 9 mile road

Tickets available now online @ or at the door

$25 general admission

The California Guitar Trio is Paul Richards of Salt Lake City, Utah; Bert Lams of Affligem, Belgium; and Hideyo Moriya of Chiba, Japan. The trio first met in England in 1987 while studying with iconic King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. After touring together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists, the three guitarists convened in Los Angeles and founded The California Guitar Trio in 1991.

The CGT plays a unique style, with guitars weaving an intricate knot work of interlocking parts to form a whole. Richards, Lams, and Moriya can create music which sounds like it is performed on a kind of “super-piano” and at other times unfolds in an ethereal, otherworldly psychedelia. In space, CGT’s music was played to wake the astronauts aboard the NASA space shuttle “Endeavor”. Here on Earth, the trio’s music has been featured extensively on NPR, NBC’s Olympics coverage, and various CBS, CNN, and ESPN TV programs.

California Guitar Trio will be sponsoring a Guitar Workshop from 3pm -5pm the day of the show. This is for guitarists of all levels and it is a remarkable opportunity to spend 2 hours with the world renowned guitarists of CGT and then pick out your seats, watch sound check or grab a bite to eat before the show begins.

Workshop Tickets are $40

Workshop attendees receive concert tickets for $15

Thanks For Your Support and Don't Miss This Event!!!

Dear Friends of MFGS

We would like to take a moment to thank you for your support in this our 10th season of presenting Fingerstyle Guitar concerts, workshops and picking parties.  Thanks to Mike Moss @ Callahan's for offering his venue for our concerts and to Pete who does the sound in the house. Can't forget our 'main man'  soundman extroidinare, Rick Ratcliff.

We would like to thank these truly amazing guitarists who came to the  Detroit Area to perform and teach Fingerstyle Guitar.  Preston Reed, Pierre Bensusan, Tony McManus, Stefano Barone, Craig D'Andrea, Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson, Ewan Dobson, California Guitar Trio (Bert Lams, Paul Richards & Hideo Moriya)  & International Guitar Night consisting of  Pino Forastiere, Brian Gore, Alexandre Gismonti and Clive Carrol.

More thanks to those that support our picking parties

Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music in Plymouth  ,

Tracey Ambrozy of Tracey's Cafe in Warren,

Gordy Shelst of  Shelest Music in St. Clair Shores.

Also a huge, huge thanks to Rob Poland of Candyrat Records  for his support of our organization and his efforts in promoting guitar music and singer songwriters all over the world.

We cannot thank enough our dear friend and a fabulous supporter of Fingerstyle Music Pam Rossi of 'Overeasy'.  Sadly her show was cancelled and we certainly miss her and wish her well.  Music misses her too!

We still have Ann Delisi on WDET

and her cohort  host of Acoustic Cafe Rob Reinhart and Essential Music on WDET

Enjoy the summer and if your looking for a great guitar fix you cannot miss the Canadian Fingerstyle Festival coming up at the end of July.  It is a bit of a hike to get there but once you look at the lineup you'll think more than twice on whether to go there.   Click on this site and look through the amazing lineup and the location &  Hope to see you there !!!

On our facebook page!/pages/Michigan-Fingerstyle-Guitar-Society/145932971825  you can post if you are driving or looking for rides to the Canadian Festival.  Also VIA Rail leaves from Windsor (and other points in between) and considering the price of gas I think the rail line is pretty competetive.

Best to get there at 6pm, pick out some nice seats. Grab, some grub and spirits, and then enjoy a very special evening of music.

For openers; if you’ve never seen anyone play the Chapman Stick; don’t miss special guest, Glenn Poor man who hails from Southwest Michigan, and is a fabulous performer in his own right. You may see this guy a lot more in the future and wouldn’t it be nice to say you saw him way back in 2010 @ Callahan’s?  Callahan's is just 15 minutes north of our usual venue and maps are available on their site,

California Guitar Trio will stick around after the show to chat about their music and sign a CD copy of their live performance this Sunday! ~ How often do you see that?

There are still open spots for the California Guitar Trio, Guitar Workshop which starts at 3pm on Sunday. Get there 15 to 20 minutes early to set up!  This is really a unique opportunity to spend a couple of hours, hands on, with a trio of truly amazing guitarists. Let’s think……..hmmmm?……to become a renowned accomplished professional guitarist, then study with legendary King Crimson Guitarist Robert Fripp for 5 years in England, and form a trio, and then travel the world performing for 20 years! And, on top of that! ... offer to impart some of what you’ve learned to a handful of guitarists of all levels for 2 hours in a very intimate setting... Let’s call that an offer you should consider (or perhaps, not refuse!). Workshop tickets are $40, but If you attend the guitar workshop your concert tickets are only $10. Call 248-646-4030 if you would like more information.

Next up on our schedule is one of the premier Finger style Guitarist …. Preston Reed. September 25th in Ferndale at the First United Methodist Church, 22331 Woodward.

Billboard Magazine calls him a “Heart stopping tour de force”,

The London Times says  “he’s “In a class of his own” –

The last time we were able to book Preston Reed was in 2003.  This guy doesn’t come around that often.  Don’t miss him!!

Future dates.  November 20th, Tony McManus

The Best Celtic Guitarist in the World   John Renbourn

Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society Updates

Dear Friends of MFGS

Well, as much as we'd like to, we can't book all the great players so Trinity House is helping out by bringing in a fabulous fingerstyle guitarist, Richard Gilewitz  this Saturday, November 7th.  He puts on a great show and if you get a chance to see him you won't be disappointed.

On Sunday November 8th, our good friend Paul Murphy of Blue Fish Music  is hosting a soon to be annual  Luthier Gathering from 1pm-5pm.   There will be about a dozen amateur and pro luthiers from Michigan, Ohio and Ontario getting together to discuss building, swap tonewoods and show off their instruments. Any friends of MFGS are welcome to check it out and try some guitars. Paul will have the stage and amp set up so there will be some open mike time and with the lesson rooms there will be some quiet places to test drive some guitars.  Paul also does repairs and helpful with advice on anything to do with guitars.

Of course you know that the remarkable Michael Chapdelaine will close out our 2009 Michigan Fingerstyle Series November 14th (click on our web site, ).  What you don't know yet that on November 14th Michael will be gracing the studio of our good friend Pam Rossi on her Overeasy show,  94.7, WCSX on the dial.  We will be on the show sometime after 9am but just set your alarm to Pam's show @ 7am and blend yourself into the morning (Sat. & Sun)  with a nice mix of great songs. Also Michael will be heading down to 101.9 WDET  to visit with Ann Delisi on her Essential Music Show at 12 noon.  Ann is back on the radio scene in Detroit on Sat. & Sun. from 12 noon to 4pm bringing home grown, eclectic and new 'essential' music to Detroit’s airwaves.

After Michael’s radio appearances MFGS will sponsor a guitar workshop from 3pm - 5pm at the First United Methodist Church.  You can't ask for a better opportunity to learn from one of the best guitarist in the world.  The cost of the workshop is $40 but workshop attendees can attend Michael's concert for just $10.  Call to reserve a seat.

Now that we've planned your day on Saturday the 14th, if you need any further info call us @  248-646-4030
