JB Davies - March 6th in Lake Orion - May 2nd Calum Graham

  #

Dear friends of MFGS

JB Davies & Ben Hassenger

Friday March 6th

Live! From the Living Room Acoustic Showcase

Unity of Lake Orion
3070 S. Baldwin Rd
Orion Township, MI

Admission: $10.00/person   Doors open at 7:30     Show at 8:00 pm

Ben Hassenger is known as Michigan's Ukulele Ambassador as well as being a guitarist and songwriter that focuses on the important things in life like love, food, dogs, Michigan, and the Detroit Tigers. He will be appearing with Steve Szilagyi on upright and ukulele bass.  Ben’s style is enthusiastic and joyful.  He is a master of the guitar as well as the mighty uke, writes songs about baseball, and has traveled the world as an educator.

JB Davies started playing guitar at the age of a 14 after seeing a John Denver concert with his mom (in matching western shirts). Seeing Leo Kottke perform in 1998 ignited him to become a student of the contemporary fingerstyle guitar movement and JB has studied under some of the top pioneers of the genre. This inspired him to explore the roots of this tradition, leading him to a turn of the century instrument called the harp guitar. JB's repertoire is eclectic, ranging from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to contemporary fingerstyle artists and his own originals. He plays in heavy alternate tunings using acoustic, baritone and harp guitars. His technique utilizes two handed tapping, two hands over the top and other unusual methods.  JB is Co-Founder and past President of the Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society (www.Fingerstyle.org)

Here is JB Davies performeing with Trevor Gordon Hall  this past weekend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fPgK1wroY8

The Living Room Acoustic Showcase is in a beautiful auditorium, comfortable seating, fine sound system, and free, convenient parking.  Refreshments available

Go north on Baldwin Rd approx 1.9 miles.  To the west you will see the Dollar General.  Unity of Lake Orion shares a short driveway with the Dollar General.  Turn west into the drive then jog left into the church parking lot.  The church is set back from the road and might not be hard to see at first.  Coming from the south, if you get to Waldon Rd, you've gone too far.

Dear Friends of MFGS

Come out and support the mission of MFGS

MFGS has been promoting fingerstyle guitar in Southeast Michigan since 2001 and this will be our second from last concert.  As a volunteer organization we have decided to take a hiatus from the Spring and Fall Concert Series!!

Take this opportunity to see one of the most gifted and remarkable guitarists we have ever had.  We don't think there is anyone so versatile as to play Classical, contemporary and 'Chet' on nylon, steel string and even harp guitars.

Should be a great show.......so don't miss it.

Muriel Anderson is the first woman to ever win the International Fingerstyle Championship in Winfield Kansas!

Also!  Muriel will be interviewed this Saturday, April 26th on Ann Delisi's Essential Music Program on WDET.  Tune in to your radio before 12 noon @ 101.9 FM or listen on your computer at http://wdet.org/shows/ann-delisis-essential-music/

Shows at 7:00-7:45     &    8:15-9:00 p.m.

STOCKING STUFFERS!!!

Not sure where to start with this one but we are feeling Really BLUE!   L.

Our dear friend and big time MFGS supporter Paul Murphy is ending part of his BlueFish Music commercial venture.  It’s hard to run a store, spend time with customers, do repairs , provide lessons and not end up working 16 hours a day.  Hard to keep up with your kids that way!

Paul will be eliminating the commercial side of his store and Starting Next Week he will be having a huge sale on all of the inventory at Bluefish Music! Paul has more than stocking stuffers too!!

Stop by or call and let Paul help you find something nice for the guitarist in your life! All sorts of guitars from acoustic to electric to bass to mandolin to ukulele!  Pickups, amplifiers, strings, books, capos, picks …. and anything else having to do with guitars.  This is the end of a 10 year adventure for Paul.

Paul is not totally gone since  he will still do guitars repairs and have a studio for lesson  out of Bluefish.   Paul is a great guy and so we wish him well.

Do stop by and get a great deal on some nice stuff.  Keep him in mind for  future lessons or guitar setups or repairs. We all would trust our guitar repairs with Paul!    All the best Paul!!

744 Starkweather St, Plymouth, (734) 927-0675 –

Hrs: Mon-Thu, 1pm-8pm; Fri,1pm-6pm; Sat, 1pm-5pm; closed on Sunday

Here is a Great Idea for a stocking stuffer for your guitarist!

One of our MFGS friends, Trevor Gordon Hall (he performed here in Feb. 2013), is going to record with Windham Hill founder/guitarist Will Ackerman.

In order to help finance this amazing opportunity he has created some great deals for us.  How about for $50 you can get 2 of his signed CDs, one of them is the one he is working on with Will Ackerman and also a 30 minute skype guitar lesson!  For $100 you get 2, 45 min skype lessons or 4 tickets to a show near you (yes he will play in Detroit in the future) Also you get 4 CD’s, one of them is their combined CD, one is Will’s and 2 are Trevor’s.  Trevor has received great accolades from those who have seen him and even Michael Chapdelaine (the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres) and Michael Manring (bassist who played with Michael Hedges)  who is one of, if not,  the best bass guitarist in the world; both have great things to say about Trevor.   Check out Trevor’s site and you will really surprise any guitarist you know!  You can go from $15 up to $5,000 and this is a win-win deal!!!   Check this out !http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-trevor-gordon-hall-record-with-will-ackerman

And another Great Idea from one of our big time supporters and friend of MFGS , Rob Poland of Candyrat Records.  Pick out some of the CDs of his great stable of musicians at www.candyrat.com

Another idea is Candyrat’s Limited Edition flash drive with 100 of their top recordings for only $50.  http://www.candyrat.com/artists/FlashDrives/Top100Tracks/

Let your friends know that International Guitar Night will again be touring throughout the US in January and February.  Here is a list of where they will be.  They meaning....Mike Dawes, Brian Gore, Quique Sinese and Pino Forastiere!

Guitarist Joe Scott studied at the Guitar Institute of Technology in California under some of the worlds finest guitarists including Robin Ford, Tommy Tedesco, Frank Gambale and the great Joe Pass.  After a stint with the New Cristy Minstrels he returned to Colorado and performed with the band Wind Machine for the next 14 years. In 1985 Joe's abilities began to change and he ended up with the diagnosis of Focal Dystonia.  Forced with this career ending diagnosis Joe went to study with classical guitarist David Leisner in NYC.  Over a period of years he relearned how to play the guitar and, like our friend Billy McLaughlin, Joe's musical career was on tract again.

Cellist Hannah was classically trained and studied with Gabriel Magyar of the Hungarian String Quartet. Initially playing in her school orchestra with her sister Sabina, Viktor Krauss and the renowned bluegrass great Alison Krauss. Hannah continued performing in the Colorado in area symphonies and festivals. At some point eager to stretch herself she entered the world of rock, funk and alternative music and her repitoire included everything from Dvorak to Zepplin, baroque to the Grateful Dead.

Hannah Alkire met Joe after receiving a call to play on a Boulder Colorado ensemble's recording. Following the directions to the rehearsal she was amazed to drive past her house and 3 doors down was where Joe Scott lived and of course, you guessed it, yes....Acoustic Eidolon was founded, Joe and Hannah were married and now have 2 children and a household of musical instruments.

Fall Concert Series starts this Friday Sept 7th.

Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society

Presents in the opening night of our Fall Concert Series

Nicholas Barron

    This Friday, September 7th

Trinity House Theatre

Show Starts at 8 pm, Doors @ 7:30

Tickets Available At the Door!!

$20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members

Let’s see…....we noticed Nicholas when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008 and we wanted to bring him to our audience here.  Yes, he is not your typical fingerstylist but he sure can play a pretty mean guitar and he plays in a style that is truly his own; percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with his original one man band attack. His voice has been called a cross between Van Morrison and Joe Cocker

This is one of those performers that you may have not heard of before but everyone starts somewhere and besides playing in a Chicago band with famed guitarist Fareed Haque is no small potatoes!  Here is a list of performers who thought enough of Nicholas to ask him to open for them.  Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Buddy Guy. He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on.....

None of those performers who asked Nicholas to open have it wrong.  We can guarantee you that this will be a dynamic night of music!!!

C’mon out and see a something different at what has been called .....

We first heard of Nicholas Barron when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008.  Although he is not your traditional fingerstylist he plays guitar in a style that is truly his own; percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with his original one man band attack. Nicholas hails from Chicago.  He started expressing his artistic talents through playing guitar at age 15. In the summer of 1982 he attended Berklee college of Music and it changed his life forever. He spent some time at the New England Conservatory of Music and then transferred to the University of Cincinnati to study Jazz guitar where he admittedly got 'schooled' studying with Charlie Parker disciple, Jimmy McGarry.  After Cincinnati he ' busked' his way through Europe where he made the lifelong decision to make a living through signing and playing guitar. Back in Chicago he started a band with Chicago guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque.

In January of 2007 , James Taylor introduced the Nicholas Barron Band as the launch artist for the New York Times Emerging Artists series at Joe's Pub in NYC. Taylor called Nicholas and the band's new CD "Undeniable".   He has opened for : Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Buddy Guy. He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on..... This will be a dynamic night of music!!!

California Guitar Trio This Saturday, November 5th. Update on their Guitar Workshop

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

The Board of MFGS wanted to take a moment to thank our friends at Detroit Guitar for sponsoring a very nice and energetic Fingerstyle Picking Party this past Sunday at their store.     http://birmingham.patch.com/articles/detroit-guitar-ready-to-rock-at-new-birmingham-store.

The big news though is our final concert of 2011 is with the

CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO

Saturday November 5th at the First United Methodist Church which is at

22331 Woodward , just south of 9 mile in Ferndale.

We have had the opportunity to meet them off an on over the years and saw them at the Ark in 2010 and asked if they would consider performing for MFGS.  They graciously said "well, we are not exactly fingerstyle performers but sure...we love Detroit" and now this is there second year at  MFGS.

General admission tickets are $25, doors open at 6:30 and performance starts at 7:30. Tickets are available here online

https://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?e=6bc4b4beac12a71dd421d59b1fad7a1c&t=tix  or you can also purchase them at the door.

For those attending the California Guitar Trio Workshop (information below) concert tickets are priced at $15.

As you read this information open up a second screen and listen to one of their compositions called 'The Marsh'

http://www.myspace.com/californiaguitartrio/music/songs/the-marsh-album-45497549

So, just a little bit about these guys you are about to see Saturday. Bert Lams graduated with a concert level degree in classical guitar studies from the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Brussels Belgium in 1984. Two years later he along with Paul Richards, who was studying guitar at the University of Utah and Hideyo Moriya from Toyko, who originally came to the States to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, met at a Guitar Craft seminar taught by legendary guitarist Robert Fripp.  “Robert introduced us to the New Standard Tuning, Based on fifths (C-G-D-A-E-G) using a steel string guitar with plectrum or pick,”.    In 1991 they started touring as the California Guitar Trio. The trio has released twelve albums: seven studio CDs featuring original CGT songs and a variety of other works spanning numerous genres, four live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music. Lams has also made a solo album of Bach preludes titled 'Nascent'. This will be an amazing concert with music ranging from classical to surf and from jazz to rock.

                                                                                          Important News

California Guitar Trio will be sponsoring a Guitar Workshop from 3pm -5pm the day of the show. This is for guitarists of all levels and it is a remarkable opportunity to spend 2 hours with the world renowned guitarists of CGT and then pick out your seats, watch sound check or grab a bite to eat before the show begins.

Born in New York, he first studied acoustic guitar with guitarist Reverend Gary Davis from 1968-1972.  Mann continued private lessons, focusing on improvisation with jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. Meanwhile, Mann received formal instruction at the Jullliard School’s pre-college program, then he finally returned to Juilliard to pursue post-baccalaureate studies in music performance and composition from 1975-76. Thanks For Your Support and Don't Miss This Event!!!

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We would like to take a moment to thank you for your support in this our 10th season of presenting Fingerstyle Guitar concerts, workshops and picking parties.  Thanks to Mike Moss @ Callahan's for offering his venue for our concerts and to Pete who does the sound in the house. Can't forget our 'main man'  soundman extroidinare, Rick Ratcliff.

We would like to thank these truly amazing guitarists who came to the  Detroit Area to perform and teach Fingerstyle Guitar.  Preston Reed, Pierre Bensusan, Tony McManus, Stefano Barone, Craig D'Andrea, Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson, Ewan Dobson, California Guitar Trio (Bert Lams, Paul Richards & Hideo Moriya)  & International Guitar Night consisting of  Pino Forastiere, Brian Gore, Alexandre Gismonti and Clive Carrol.

More thanks to those that support our picking parties

Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music in Plymouth http://www.bluefishguitars.com/  ,

Tracey Ambrozy of Tracey's Cafe in Warren http://www.facebook.com/pages/Traceys-Corner-Cafe-owner/192336924110472,

Gordy Shelst of http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shelest-Music-Workshop/137302566303579  Shelest Music in St. Clair Shores.

Also a huge, huge thanks to Rob Poland of Candyrat Records http://www.candyrat.com/  for his support of our organization and his efforts in promoting guitar music and singer songwriters all over the world.

We cannot thank enough our dear friend and a fabulous supporter of Fingerstyle Music Pam Rossi of 'Overeasy'.  Sadly her show was cancelled and we certainly miss her and wish her well.  Music misses her too!

We still have Ann Delisi on WDET  http://www.wdet.org/shows/ann-delisis-essential-music/

and her cohort  host of Acoustic Cafe Rob Reinhart   http://www.acafe.com/about.html and Essential Music on WDET

Enjoy the summer and if your looking for a great guitar fix you cannot miss the Canadian Fingerstyle Festival coming up at the end of July.  It is a bit of a hike to get there but once you look at the lineup you'll think more than twice on whether to go there.   Click on this site and look through the amazing lineup and the location &  Hope to see you there !!!    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGEHJCIfOeY

On our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Michigan-Fingerstyle-Guitar-Society/145932971825  you can post if you are driving or looking for rides to the Canadian Festival.  Also VIA Rail leaves from Windsor (and other points in between) and considering the price of gas I think the rail line is pretty competetive.

MFGS Concert Update & Survey

  #

Please complete the following survey

 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Friends of MFGS

As you may know by now we have switched our venue to Callahan’s in Auburn Hills.  This was done for various reasons, partly due to the cost of the venue and also the work involved in tearing down the stage after the show. Being an all volunteer organization these were some of the factors that caused the change.

We also thought that Callahan’s offers an option of having dinner and drinks with friends prior to, or during the show.  The sound system at Callahan’s is very good and it is a fixed set up.  Both Rick Ratcliff from the Church and Pete at Callahan’s have received rave reviews from the performers so that was an even exchange. Although we raised ticket prices for 2 shows (California Guitar Trio & International Guitar Night due to the expense of multiple performers) our ticket prices have remained fixed at $20 and $15 for students and seniors.

As per our mission to promote Fingerstyle Guitar we pay all performers a  generous flat guaranteed fee and they receive a large percent of any money that is left over after the cost of the show/travel/hotels etc. MFGS does not make any money, in fact we have lost  money on most of our shows.

Now that we have had several performances under our belts at Callahan’s we would like your thoughts on our venue change and other thoughts you may have.  I will personally review all responses and all responding emails will have an opportunity to win one of 10 CD’s from various artists that have performed for us or some that our friend, Rob Poland, at Candyrat Records has donated to MFGS.   If you are not at our next show on April 16th then we will ship them to you at no cost.

This survey is meant for those who have attended one of our shows in the past, either at the First United Church, Callahan's or another venue. You may also complete the survey if you are considering attending a show in the future but please indicate that on the survey.

A synopsis of the responses will be posted after our next concert.

Please copy and paste the questions & your answers on to an email sent to

What city or zip code do you live in?

How many MFGS shows have you been to in the past?

Likes and dislikes about Callahan’s?  What would make you attend, or not attend a concert @ Callahan’s?  Is the fact that there is food and drinks a draw??

Likes and dislikes about First United Church?  What would make you attend, or not attend a concert @ the First United Church, or a similar type venue?

Is there a venue or location that you think would be better for MFGS?   Saying that, this means you would attend shows there!

Performers you would like to see at MFGS?

Do you think the pricing of our shows is fair?

If you attend picking parties sponsored by MFGS where is your favorite location or would you suggest a new one that you would attend.  Any other thoughts on picking parites.

If you have attended a guitar workshop sponsored by MFGS is there anything you would suggest we change, considering this is for guitarists of all levels.

Would you be willing to post flyers at local coffee shops, stores etc?

Would you like to be more involved with MFGS?

Any other thoughts or comments you would like to share?

Thanks for your support

Sincerely,

Ron Stavale

President, MFGS
