From Rome, Italy - Stefano Barone - Multiple Dates

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We have another amazing set of concerts coming up!  Starting,

from Rome Italy,

  contemporary guitarist/composer

Stefano Barone

Stefano Barone has been to the States several times in the past as a solo artist and also part of the avant-garde Italian trio Guitar Republic.

This year Stefano was invited to the US to perform during the Detroit Free Press Film Festival April 11th - 15th.  Free Press Executive Video Producer and Director Brian Kaufman has used Stefano's compositions for several of his most recent films including this years world premiere of 'The Wall'.  Barone will perform a short set prior to 2 films and then an afternoon engagement and discussion on music and film with Brian Kaufman & Stefano.

Born in Naples, Barone studied piano in his youth and then turned to the acoustic guitar. In 2003 after hearing the late Michael Hedges striking album 'Arial Boundaries', Barone changed his approach to music and moved to Rome to study with the renowned Pino Forastiere.  Barone embraced contemporary music, in particular American Minimalism following along the lines of Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Dominic Frasca.

His pieces are created with a 6 and 10 stringed guitar, a multi-track machine  along with using a cello bow to orchestrate  his compositions and arrangements. His music has a cinematic quality to it because it creates perfect balance bordering between acoustic and electronic sound.

Barone will be appearing at a series of appearances and performances in Michigan while he is here.

Friday April 6th - Trinity House Theatre - Tickets are $20 and available at www.fingerstyle.org

Friday April 13th - 20 Front Street in Lake Orion - Tickets $18 and available at 20 Front Street, www.20frontstreet.com

For his other appearances at The Robin Theatre in Lansing, Red Sky Stage in PetoskeySection House in Little Lakes please go to www.fingerstyle.org for information. In addition to the above performances Barone will be giving masterclasses at Peck School of the Arts in Milwaukee and Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.

"Stefano's music is akin to great storytelling, eliciting a broad range of emotions and an even broader range of sounds from an instrument that often sounds nothing like a guitar. As a documentary filmmaker, I was immediately drawn to its power."           Brian Kaufman - Detroit Free Press

***********************************************

Ian Ethan Case

Thursday March 29th @ 20 Front Street

Although this is a bit of a reach for our typical solo fingerstyle guitarists performances you will find yourself listening to a refreshing jazzy, Latin, Eastern European sound on this night.

Take a guitarist who was born in Croatia and at age 12 entered one of the most prestigious music schools in Europe 'Mozarteum' in Salzburg where he studied under such famed guitarists such as Eliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch.

Then after years of performing on his Richard Brune nylon string guitar, mix him with a drummer and bass player in Chicago and you have the Goran Ivanovic Trio!

The Goran Ivanovic Trio will perform at Trinity House Theatre in Livonia on Saturday May 14th.

JB Davies - March 6th in Lake Orion - May 2nd Calum Graham

  #

Dear friends of MFGS

JB Davies & Ben Hassenger

Friday March 6th

Live! From the Living Room Acoustic Showcase

Unity of Lake Orion
3070 S. Baldwin Rd
Orion Township, MI

Admission: $10.00/person   Doors open at 7:30     Show at 8:00 pm

Ben Hassenger is known as Michigan's Ukulele Ambassador as well as being a guitarist and songwriter that focuses on the important things in life like love, food, dogs, Michigan, and the Detroit Tigers. He will be appearing with Steve Szilagyi on upright and ukulele bass.  Ben’s style is enthusiastic and joyful.  He is a master of the guitar as well as the mighty uke, writes songs about baseball, and has traveled the world as an educator.

JB Davies started playing guitar at the age of a 14 after seeing a John Denver concert with his mom (in matching western shirts). Seeing Leo Kottke perform in 1998 ignited him to become a student of the contemporary fingerstyle guitar movement and JB has studied under some of the top pioneers of the genre. This inspired him to explore the roots of this tradition, leading him to a turn of the century instrument called the harp guitar. JB's repertoire is eclectic, ranging from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to contemporary fingerstyle artists and his own originals. He plays in heavy alternate tunings using acoustic, baritone and harp guitars. His technique utilizes two handed tapping, two hands over the top and other unusual methods.  JB is Co-Founder and past President of the Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society (www.Fingerstyle.org)

Here is JB Davies performeing with Trevor Gordon Hall  this past weekend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fPgK1wroY8

Thanks and Giving Some Fingerstyle Updates

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Hoping that you are enjoying this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend with family and friends.  We wanted to let you know that MFGS will host 2 or 3 concerts next fall through Trinity House.  We took a little break and appreciate Trinity House hosting a few of our favorite artists while we recharged our batteries.

Let us know who you would like to see next fall by emailing us at michfingerstyle@gmail.com .  We can't guarantee that the artists that you want will be available but we will try and we  always like to hear what you think.   How many of you would like to see us organize another picking party or two?  Do you want workshops before the concerts?   Let us know via email or on Facebook!

So what's up with the fingerstyle music scene these days

MFGS friend Trevor Gordon Hall is touring Italy and has a new CD out that has garnered a lot of great press.  Talking about 'Mind Heart Fingers' Willl Ackerman, Founder of Windham Hill Records says “Trevor takes acoustic solo guitar playing to a new level. I'm listening to his new album Mind Heart Fingers right now. Wow! Beautiful. Astonishing. Inspiring. The original compositions and arrangements are stunning.  I enjoy the brilliant uniqueness of the Kalimbatar pieces. Well done Trevor!"   http://www.trevorgordonhall.com/

Word from Italy is that Pino Forastiere is releasing a new album in January.  Always breaking the trail with his music, we can't wait to hear it!   Stefano Barone is also working on new music and recently toured in Russia.  We will keep you updated!

Candyrat Records has some great stocking stuffers!  100 top tracks on a flash drive featuring 21 Candyrat artists including Andy McKee, Antoine Dufour, Andrew White, Calum Graham, Craig D'Andrea, Daniel Voth, Don Ross, Dean Magraw, Ewan Dobson, Gareth Pearson, Hunter Van Larkins, Jimmy Wahlsteen, Kelly Valleau, Mike Dawes, Peter Ciluzzi, Pino Forastiere, Richard Barrett, Sergio Altamura, Stefano Barone, Trevor Gordon Hall, and Van Larkins. Includes 12 bonus Candyrat HD videos. Also some new T-shirts plus a great lineup of artists  CDs to choose from!  www.candyrat.com

Noel Night is coming up on December 6th and a great guitarist friend of MFGS, Nick Schillace performs in Lac La Belle,  an acoustic duo from Detroit with Jennie Knaggs http://www.laclabellemusic.com/store .  They will be performing at Noel Night along with some great music in Downtown Detroit!  Don't miss this! http://midtowndetroitinc.org/events/noel-night/noel-night

Trinity House Theatre is always a great place to hear music and they have a fundraiser for one of their friends Susie Keat who is struggling with some medical bills.  Hey......you can perform that night too!  http://www.trinityhousetheatre.org/posts/promotion/empty-chair-night/

One of our young guitar friends Yeman Al-Rawi entered into the Ernie Ball Prodigy Contest where he can win a trip to Hollywood to record a CD and perform an opening act for one of Andy's concerts.   Yeman opened for Michael Chapdelaine last year and he has a shot at this so take a few moments and go to this spot and vote for him!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rny4BVVXye0

Wishing you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season

Thank You for supporting the artists who create this beautiful music and the venues that allow them to perform!

Added Dates in Michigan For Pino Forastiere -

  #

Dear Friends,

Back in 2005 we hosted an unknown guitarist from Italy named Pino Forastiere.  He had a couple Youtube videos and we were intrigued by his work and when we saw him perform here with MFGS we were stunned by his musicality and his flawless technique.  He will be performing Saturday night October 26th at Trinity House Theatre. Door at 7:30, show at 8pm. Tickets are $20 and $17 for Trinity House members.

It is hard to describe Pino's performances but one of our members said Forastiere is "Simply Brilliant".  This will be our last concert of this 2013 season. Pino has added a couple other Michigan shows so if you live in the UP or know anyone near there check these out.

Tuesday October 22nd in Escanaba Michigan at Positively the Center of Success, 1300 Ludington, Escanaba Michigan. Tickets are $12  for information call the center at (906) 789-7446

Wednesday, October 23rd in Marquette Michigan @ The Federation of Women's Club @ 104 W. Ridge Rd. Marquette. Door at 7p , show at 7:30 - Tickets available at the door are $12

Part of MFGS's mission is to support the artist who perform the music we love.  Pino is one of the elite guitarists for this genre in the world.  The renowned John Stropes of the Peck School of the Arts in Wisconsin (and the one who transcribed Hedges works and co-authored 'Rhythm, Sonority, Silence' along with Hedges) says of Forastiere " he  is one of the finest fingerstylists to emerge in the last decade"  (he's talking about on the whole planet!)

This will be an amazing night of music!

Here is one of Pino's first pieces that got us hooked way back in 2005!   http://youtu.be/TqNHaCUIAlw

concert tickets available at www.fingerstyle.org

or by calling Trinity House 734-464-6302
