We
first heard of Nicholas Barron when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008. Although he is not your traditional
fingerstylist he plays guitar in a style that is truly his own; percussive and
highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with
his original one man band attack. His voice has been called a cross between Van
Morrison and Joe Cocker.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9O6dM114WE&feature=relmfu
Nicholas hails from Chicago. He started expressing his artistic talents
through playing guitar at age 15. In the summer of 1982 he attended Berklee
college of Music and it changed his life forever. He spent some time at the New
England Conservatory of Music and then transferred to the University of
Cincinnati to study Jazz guitar where he admittedly got 'schooled' studying
with Charlie Parker disciple, Jimmy McGarry. After Cincinnati he ' busked' his way through
Europe where he made the lifelong decision to make a living through signing and
playing guitar. Back in Chicago he started a band with Chicago guitar virtuoso
Fareed Haque.
In January of 2007 , James Taylor introduced the Nicholas Barron
Band as the launch artist for the New York Times Emerging Artists series at
Joe's Pub in NYC. Taylor called Nicholas and the band's new CD
"Undeniable". He has opened
for : Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White
Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood,
and Buddy Guy. He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including
for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on..... This will be a dynamic night of music!!! his music can be purchased on Candyrat Records http://www.candyrat.com/artists/nicholasbarron/ MFGS & Friends Upcoming Concerts

Critics also call his guitar playing
“breathtaking,” “haunting,” and “rich.” Guitar magazines describe his
compositions as “spectacular,” “elegant,” and “exquisite,” and praise his
twelve-string work as “revelatory.” Media reviewers trace the roots of his
style to folk, jazz, pop, and classical music, categorize his playing as
“Baroque Folk,” “New World Steel String,” “Solo Guitar Orchestra,”
“Instrumental Americana,” and compare him to Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges.

Alert - Guitars Stolen from Local Music Store- Ron Stavale [ 5/11/2012 - 17:39 ] # Dear Friends of MFGS Please pass this info along to whomever you know in the music world. One of our good friends and long time supporters, Huber & Breese Music Store in Fraser Michigan had a theft of 5 guitars this week. We all know folks in the music business who are trying to make a living in this economy and this can not be tolerated. http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Pricey-guitars-swiped-from-Fraser-music-store/-/1719418/13068548/-/uebcyhz/-/index.html FRASER, MICH (WXYZ) - They're singing the blues today at Huber & Breese Music in Fraser. Items valued at over $10,000 were taken in a late night robbery Wednesday. The thief broke 2 windows trying to get into the store. Once inside, he chose 3 Gibson guitars, all Les Pauls. He also made off with a Fender Stratocaster guitar. But he didn't stop there. He took the whole cash register too, an antique 1896 National Cash Register.
Co-owner Judy Huber says, "Thank goodness no one was hurt." Fraser Police are looking for a man wearing a light colored baseball cap, a light colored jacket, and blue jeans. He took off in a light colored SUV. The store will celebrate 40 years in business next week. If you think you can help the police, call them at 586-293-1425. Keep us posted about music events in your area. Thanks to Al Petteway, Amy White and the folks at Trinity House www.trinityhousetheatre.org for what was described as a 'magical' evening of music. Friday February 10th at Trinity
House, MFGS presents Don Ross and Brooke Miller! We chose Don Ross to be the first
performer for MFGS in 2001 in what is now 10 years ago. We are bringing him
back for the 4th or 5th time?
Why? Because we love him and & well actually, he is one of today's
true innovators of guitar composition and technique and one of the top
guitarists in the world. In September 1996, he managed to do what no other
player has done: he won the prestigious
U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice. The competition, held
yearly in Winfield, Kansas, cannot be won only with immaculate technique, but
the player's music must also display a high degree of emotion and intensity -
hallmarks of Don's style.
Don will share
the bill with Brooke Miller who is a fabulous singer songwriter in her own rite
(and Don’s wife). Winner
of the 2007 Colleen Peterson songwriting award (conferred by the Ontario Council
of Folk Festivals), Brooke is destined for recognition as one of Canada’s
strongest new crop of singer songwriter, Brooke Miller. Brooke’s career began on
Prince Edward Island, Canada, in a loud Brooke has just released her fourth CD,
‘BROOKE MILLER’. “....Miller's vocals
serve the melody and the lyrics with a modesty that lets them shine. But don't
underestimate her voice & undeniable guitar skills. When Miller sings, it
has the same effect as someone looking
you straight in the eye. You believe
her. “- Jim Farber

California Guitar Trio This Saturday, November 5th. Update on their Guitar Workshop- Ron Stavale [ 11/1/2011 - 13:41 ] # Dear Friends of MFGS The Board of MFGS wanted to take a moment to thank our friends at Detroit Guitar for sponsoring a very nice and energetic Fingerstyle Picking Party this past Sunday at their store. http://birmingham.patch.com/articles/detroit-guitar-ready-to-rock-at-new-birmingham-store. The big news though is our final concert of 2011 is with the CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO Saturday November 5th at the First United Methodist Church which is at 22331 Woodward , just south of 9 mile in Ferndale. We have had the opportunity to meet them off an on over the years and saw them at the Ark in 2010 and asked if they would consider performing for MFGS. They graciously said "well, we are not exactly fingerstyle performers but sure...we love Detroit" and now this is there second year at MFGS. General admission tickets are $25, doors open at 6:30 and performance starts at 7:30. Tickets are available here online https://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?e=6bc4b4beac12a71dd421d59b1fad7a1c&t=tix or you can also purchase them at the door. So, just a little bit about these guys you are about to see Saturday. Bert Lams graduated with a concert level degree in classical guitar studies from the prestigious
Royal Conservatory of Brussels Belgium in 1984. Two years later he along with Paul Richards, who was studying guitar at the University of Utah and Hideyo Moriya from Toyko, who originally came to the States to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, met at a Guitar
Craft seminar taught by legendary guitarist Robert Fripp. “Robert introduced us to the New Standard Tuning,
Based on fifths (C-G-D-A-E-G) using a steel string guitar with plectrum or
pick,”. In 1991 they started touring as the California Guitar Trio. The trio has released twelve albums: seven studio CDs featuring original CGT songs and a variety of other works spanning numerous genres, four live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music. Lams has also made a solo album of Bach preludes titled 'Nascent'. This will be an amazing concert with music ranging from classical to surf and from jazz to rock. Important News California Guitar Trio will be sponsoring a Guitar Workshop from 3pm -5pm the day of the show. This is for guitarists of all levels and it is a remarkable opportunity to spend 2 hours with the world renowned guitarists of CGT and then pick out your seats, watch sound check or grab a bite to eat before the show begins. Richards (USA), Bert Lams (Belgium) & Hideo Moriya (Japan) created the
California Guitar Trio (CGT) after initially meeting at Robert Fripp’s (King
Crimson) Guitar Craft Course in 1987. The trio has toured worldwide since then
frequently sharing the stage with Tony Levin (King Crimson). CGT has released 12
albums: 7 studio CDs featuring original CGT songs and a variety of other works
spanning numerous genres, 4 live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and
not-so familiar Christmas music. Lams, who graduated
with a concert level degree in classical guitar studies at the Royal
Conservatory of Brussels, has also made a solo album of Bach preludes
titled ‘Nascent’. Their 2010 release ‘Andromeda’ was named
the Best CDs of 2010 in the instrumental category at the
Indie Acoustic Project. CGT’s music was featured on television
coverage for the 1998, 2000, 2002 & 2004 Olympics, they performed on the
2003 Grammy Award Show and they also provided wake up music for the crew of
NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavor as it orbited Earth. Their music ranges all the
way from King Crimson to Bach, fusing rock, blues, jazz, world music,
progressive, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music.
The California Guitar Trio's stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have

Born in New York, he first studied acoustic guitar with
guitarist Reverend Gary Davis from 1968-1972. Mann continued private lessons, focusing on
improvisation with jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. Meanwhile, Mann received
formal instruction at the Jullliard School’s pre-college program, then he
finally returned to Juilliard to pursue post-baccalaureate studies in music
performance and composition from 1975-76. In these early years, Mann played
with guitarists John Fahey, Bukka White & Son House
Among guitarists and
critics, Woody Mann is considered a modern master. While the blues are his
touchstone, he seems to draw inspiration from every direction, blending a
myriad influences with ease and grace.

many guitar styles that he can change moods on a dime, weaving lyrical single
string lines and chord harmonies that can take his tunes across the musical
divides between genres…” Acoustic Guitar Magazine
“ With impeccable tone, gutsy phrasing, beautiful harmonies,
and cool dynamics, Mann is in a class by himself. Phenomenal.” -Guitar Player Magazine

October 1st Woody Mann in Ferndale- Ron Stavale [ 9/8/2011 - 23:45 ] # Dear Friends of MFGS Our fall concerts will be back at The First United Methodist Church in Ferndale Michigan. For our first concert we will be featuring the American Guitar Legend Woody Mann on October 1st at 7:30 pm. Guitarists will know him but for those who may not be familiar with him here is a quote you might like to read. “Not
only was he taught by the peerless guitar picker the Rev Gary Davis, but Mann
has played with Son House, Bukka White and John Fahey and has studied jazz
under the great Lennie Tristano. In between giving lessons to Paul Simon and
accompanying Dori Previn, he has also managed to cut some dazzling music, both
by himself and in collaboration with other performers. Don’t miss a chance to see him; you are
unlikely to hear anything- or anyone- better in the fields that Mann has chosen
to master.” THE LONDON TIMES Woody Mann in Concert and Guitar Workshop October 1st First United Methodist Church 22331 Woodward, just south of 9 mile.

Enjoy the summer and if your looking for a great guitar fix you cannot miss the Canadian Fingerstyle Festival coming up at the end of July. It is a bit of a hike to get there but once you look at the lineup you'll think more than twice on whether to go there. Click on this site and look through the amazing lineup and the location & Hope to see you there !!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGEHJCIfOeY
On our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Michigan-Fingerstyle-Guitar-Society/145932971825 you can post if you are driving or looking for rides to the Canadian Festival. Also VIA Rail leaves from Windsor (and other points in between) and considering the price of gas I think the rail line is pretty competetive.
