This Saturday, Trevor Gordon Hall - This Sunday Picking Party

  #

Saturday February 9th @ 8 pm - Doors At 7:30

@ Trinity House Theatre

MFGS presents

Trevor Gordon Hall

The Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society was founded in 2001 by local guitarists who had a profound appreciation of fingerstyle guitar music.  The mission of MFGS is to promote fingerstyle guitar through performances, workshops and goodwill.  We have been fortunate to host over 80 concerts and guitar workshops in the last 12 years as well as 3-4 Picking Parties each year. This Saturday we are bringing in Candyrat Recording Artist Trevor Gordon Hall.  Although not well known in these parts, part of our mission is to bring up and coming guitarists to Michigan in order to promote their music and allow our members the opportunity to see some of these musicians earlier in their career. Trevor has certainly impressed many famous musicians and his list of great reviews is listed here.   http://www.trevorgordonhall.com/press.html

One of our favorites reviews is from Windham Hill Record Founder William Ackerman who says

"Trevor Gordon Hall is one of the few post-Michael Hedges guitarists who has managed to incorporate that vast repository of innovation while having an artistic voice strong enough to steadfastly avoid imitation. However technically proficient Trevor is, he is not one of the swarm of guitarists who revel in guitar gymnastics for their sake alone. His technique follows artistic expression as it should. Trevor is capable of a range of styles while having every note seem to express something sincere and meaningful to him. This is a fine debut from a guitarist we will need to pay attention to.” Will Ackerman - Grammy winning guitarist/composer and producer, founded the influential Windham Hill Records

Rob Poland & CandyRat Records has introduced us to an amazing array of acoustic guitarists. Trevor Gordon Hall is one of that stable’s ‘young guns’. Trevor is a Philadelphia based acoustic instrumentalist whose compositions range in style from driving rhythms to soft melodic phrases.   Trevor has deftly incorporated a kalimba onto one of his guitars and into some of his pieces.

Trevor has garnered high praises from some really influential folks in music.

“Very inventive concept and excellent performance...” Laurence Juber

“In the genre of intriguing guitar players Trevor really stands out. His music is both soothing and challenging..."   Graham Nash

“Trevor is a virtuoso. I’ve never seen a guitarist/composer this good at his age”- Joe Nicolo Former President /Producer/Owner of Ruffhouse Records; found and signed Lauryn Hill, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, Kris Kross; produced James Taylor, Aerosmith.

We could go on and on with more reviews from bassist Michael Manring, Jazz great Pat Martino, percussionist Billy Cobham and Will Ackerman from the Windham Hill Label.

You’re going to want to say you saw him @ Trinity House Theatre in 2013 !!

Trevor will be sponsoring a 2 hour hands on guitar workshop at Trinity House at 3pm - 5pm the same day as the show.  Workshop fee is $40 and you can take $10 off your concert ticket if you attend the workshop.

A serious professional in his teens, McLaughlin left his home and rock band in Minneapolis for the University of Southern California guitar department where he became interested in minimalist composers Phillip Glass and Steve Reich. Employing what would become his signature style of placing both hands on the fretboard, McLaughlin began composing for his first release using a technique of 'hammer-ons" and 'pull-offs" that create a harp-like effect on the acoustic guitar. This unusual approach led Billy to extensive national touring earning multiple NACA Campus Entertainer awards. In 1995 McLaughlin signed a multi-album international contract with Virgin Records label Narada whose first release, Fingerdance, peaked at #7 on the Billboard charts. Hundreds of shows a year and another release deep into the contract with Narada, he began struggling with his hands – something felt 'off" and it was getting worse.

For two years he struggled with a mysterious and unrelenting condition of unexplainable muscle spasms and contractions. Shockingly as symptoms grew worse he could no longer perform most of his own repertoire. In 2001, Billy was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder called focal dystonia. The diagnosis was confirmed at the Mayo Clinic.................

MFGS 2013 Concert Series & Happy New Year

  #

From all of us at MFGS we hope you had a special Holiday Season with your family and friends and we wish you all the best in this New Year!

MFGS Winter/Spring 2013  Concert Series & Workshops at Trinity House

January 26th, 2013- Billy McLaughlin – Perhaps one of the first fingerstyle or ‘New Age’ CDs any of us purchased was Billy McLaughlin's ‘Fingerdance’. His Top Ten Billboard CD opened many of our ears to the slightly amplified and percussive tapping sound of the acoustic guitar. Struck with Focal Dystonia, in 2002 he considered his career over but his passion for his music drove him to a solution. He decided change hands and relearn the guitar left handed! (don't try that at home!)  A remarkable musician and friend of MFGS.

February 9th, 2013 Trevor Gordon Hall - CandyRat Records has introduced us to an amazing array of acoustic guitarists to enjoy and Trevor Gordon Hall is one of that stable’s ‘young guns’. You’ll want to be the one to say “I saw him at MFGS in 2013”. He’s that good!!. “Sharp, absorbing and beautiful meditations for guitar that will get your mind moving in new ways." Tom Moon, Music Critic; Contributor to NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’/Rolling Stone/GQ/Blender/Vibe/Spin, writer of ‘1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die’

March 23rd, 2013 –Tony McManus - Legendary guitarist of Pentangle fame, John Renbourn, says “ Tony McManus is the best Celtic Guitarist in the World”! MFGS second’s that! This will be the Scottish born guitarist’s third visit to MFGS. His performances are memorable and the lad has a bit of wit about him too!

April 13th, Antoine Dufour - Winning the Canadian Fingerstyle Competition in 2006 was the launching pad for this amazing progressive fingerstyle guitarist. Antoine has toured the world several times and comes back to MFGS for the 4th time. Antoine is another one of Rob Poland's Candyrat guitarists and he has garnered high acclaim for his 6 CDs to date and his truly dynamic performances.

April 27thAcoustic EidolonWhat do you get when you put on a performance with a cello and a double neck guitar? Joe Scott and Hannah Alkire founded Acoustic Eidolon in 1998 and have created such a unique sound with their music that this show will be a treat for us all. It is their first performance with MFGS and Trinity House Theatre

We will be updating our website, www.fingerstyle.org, soon. Here is a concert we recently heard about that you might be interested in. ..On January 19th Don Ross and Brooke Miller will be playing in Windsor.

http://www.facebook.com/events/179965372145846/

To end out the year we would like to acknowledge a few guitarists that have graced our stage and who have garnered some end of the year acknowledgements.

Congratulations to MFGS friend Al Petteway! His recent CD, ‘ It's Only The Blues’, was selected by two editors of Acoustic Guitar Magazine as an Essential Album of 2012!BTW, they're right! Great CD. Highly recommended!

The Nationally syndicated Radio Show, ‘Echoes’, selected Pino Forastiere’s ‘From 1 to 8’ as one of the 25 Essential Echoes CDs of 2012.These are the albums that the Echoes staff thought were the most significant releases of 2012 that were played on the program. Forastiere’s From 1 to 8: “We get a lot of solo guitar albums in. Only one of them was perfect. This is it" John DiLiberto, Echoes - http://echoesblog.wordpress.com/2012/12/27/25-essential-echoes-cds-the-best-of-2012/

'Echoes' Listener's Poll chose Calfornia Guitar Trio's 'Masterworks' as one of the Essential CDs of 2012, http://echoesblog.wordpress.com/2012/12/19/best-of-echoes-2012-listener-poll-results/

Locally, For nearly three years, Free Press photographer Brian Kaufman traversed the hallways and rooftops of the mammoth Packard Plant, documenting the decaying structure. He trained his camera on scrappers and fires, wildlife and crumbling architecture -- all to tell the story of how a symbol of industrial might became ground zero for Rust Belt blight. Brian has woven together some insightful poetry of Brian has woven together some insightful poetry of Pulitizer Prize Winner Philip Levine and the avant-garde music of Italy’s Guitar Republic (Pino Forastiere, Sergio Altamura and Stefano Barone) along with his brilliant photography and film work to make a truly stunning and must see documentary. This is a 6 minute intro to the documentary which will come out in 2013. Play it with some decent speakers and a big screen….Enjoy!

Speaking of Italy, if you can’t get there and want to catch some great music with perhaps a lean towards acoustic guitar, Stefania Benigni has a link on her facebook page to her radio show ‘Personal Jesus’ which airs in Rome every Sunday. Check it out and listen to the programs posted on her page.  Even if you’re not fluent in Italian the music is contemporary and the sound is universal. http://www.facebook.com/PersonalJesusRadioPopolareRoma

If you hear of any other accolades or announcements please let us know and we will put them in our newsletter.

End of the year thanks go to Bill Keith of Trinity House for sharing the Theatre with us. Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music http://bluefishguitars.com/ for doing sound at the concerts and hosting some of our picking parties. We hope to get one soon so stay tuned! Trace Bundy Concert Has Sold Out!!!

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Just to let you know that Trace Bundy’s show this Friday night has sold out !

Trinity House’s intimate venue does limit seating but this certainly lets us know that we should be inviting Trace back for another show in the future.

Our final season’s concert will be a Christmas Concert with Stephen Bennett on Saturday December 15th at Trinity House Theatre. Stephen Bennett is one of the most revered guitarists on the planet and many of today’s fingerstylists site him as an inspiration to them. Here is Stephen’s website http://harpguitar.com/ and you’ll hear more about his performance in the next few weeks.

Remember to save the date…December 15th!

Again, a sellout is good news for but we realize it disappoints others. All in all, we thank you for supporting MFGS’s mission of supporting Fingerstyle Guitar.

From all of us at MFGS ….we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving with your families and friends!

Trace Bundy in Concert - Friday November 16th

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

We would like to send a special thanks along to Eric Lugosch who gave an amazing performance last Saturday night at Trinity House.  Classic Americana music from Rev. Gary Davis to Joni Mitchell and his own compositions.  We don't know where this guy has been hiding all this time but he is a great teacher, has great chops and is pretty funny guy on stage. If you ever get chance to see Eric, don't pass it by.  His website has a 'Fingerstyle Academy www.ericlugosch.com/lessonhome.html, has lots of free (yes he admits he is a bad businessman) downloads.

Our next concert is Friday November 16th with the truly amazing Trace Bundy.  Back in 2008 Acoustic Guitar gave Trace the Most Promising New Talent Award ahead of the likes of Andy McKee and Macyn Taylor.  Called the 'Acoustic Ninja' for his forays into playing the guitar with multiple capos along with deft harmonics and occasional looping is a site to be seen and heard.

This is Trace's first concert here with MFGS and We expect this concert to sell out with over half of the 87 seats sold already. Go to www.fingerstyle.org and click on the link for tickets.

Show @ 8pm, doors at 7:30.  Tickets are $20 for general admission and $17 for Trinity House Members.

There is no guitar workshop for this show

This Saturday November 3rd Eric Lugosch in Concert.

  #

MFGS is Proud to Present This Saturday, November 3rd

US Fingerstyle Guitar Competition Winner

Eric Lugosch

Saturday November 3rd at Trinity House Theatre

One of the original great fingerstylists of our time.

Lugosch places his tunes within pleasant, folkish guitar settings....he masterfully exploits his prodigious fingerpicking skills, embellishing his simple, flowing songs with appealing baroque flourishes that sound homey rather than flashy. "    Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

“ He has a discernible style and approach to the instrument that I really admire and respect. And frankly, that moves me and reminds me of why I love and play music in the first place.” Stephen Bennett

“Eric’s playing has a indefinable quality that hits you immediately. As a guitar player you may notice how beautiful the playing is and how effortlessly it flows.       Pat Donohue

Dear Friends of MFGS

We are resending this newletter with a change in date information for our first of the fall season Picking Party @ Bluefish Music.  The Picking Party will now be held on Sunday October 21st from 3pm to 6pm.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.   Bluefish Guitar owner Paul Murphy has graciously opened up his shop for us to come to perform, network with other guitarists or  just listen to your fellow guitarist play.  What is important about these Picking Parties is that they are held in a very supportive and non competitive environment.  You just have to like the guitar to come by.   If need be remember that Paul does repairs also so if your guitar is limping a bit or or just needs a new set of strings then stop on by.  This gathering will be hosted by MFGS's own Dave Pierson.

Fall Concert Series starts this Friday Sept 7th.

Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society

Presents in the opening night of our Fall Concert Series

Nicholas Barron

    This Friday, September 7th

Trinity House Theatre

Show Starts at 8 pm, Doors @ 7:30

Tickets Available At the Door!!

$20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members

Let’s see…....we noticed Nicholas when he toured with Andy McKee in 2008 and we wanted to bring him to our audience here.  Yes, he is not your typical fingerstylist but he sure can play a pretty mean guitar and he plays in a style that is truly his own; percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and funky tunings that go along with his original one man band attack. His voice has been called a cross between Van Morrison and Joe Cocker

This is one of those performers that you may have not heard of before but everyone starts somewhere and besides playing in a Chicago band with famed guitarist Fareed Haque is no small potatoes!  Here is a list of performers who thought enough of Nicholas to ask him to open for them.  Al Green, BB King, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Cash, War, Average White Band, Michael Bolton, Tuck and Patti, Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Buddy Guy. He has sung on numerous national and local TV spots including for Comcast, Coors, Miller, Cherry 7-UP, McDonalds and on and on.....

None of those performers who asked Nicholas to open have it wrong.  We can guarantee you that this will be a dynamic night of music!!!

C’mon out and see a something different at what has been called .....

Alert - Guitars Stolen from Local Music Store

  #

  Dear Friends of MFGS

Please pass this info along to whomever you know in the music world.  One of our good friends and long time supporters, Huber & Breese Music Store in Fraser Michigan had a theft of 5 guitars this week.  We all know folks in the music business who are trying to make a living in this economy and this can not be tolerated.

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Pricey-guitars-swiped-from-Fraser-music-store/-/1719418/13068548/-/uebcyhz/-/index.html

FRASER, MICH (WXYZ) - They're singing the blues today at Huber & Breese Music in Fraser.

Items valued at over $10,000 were taken in a late night robbery Wednesday.

The thief broke 2 windows trying to get into the store. Once inside, he chose 3 Gibson guitars, all Les Pauls. He also made off with a Fender Stratocaster guitar. But he didn't stop there. He took the whole cash register too, an antique 1896 National Cash Register.

Co-owner Judy Huber says, "Thank goodness no one was hurt."

Fraser Police are looking for a man wearing a light colored baseball cap, a light colored jacket, and blue jeans. He took off in a light colored SUV.

The store will celebrate 40 years in business next week.

If you think you can help the police, call them at 586-293-1425.

Keep us posted about music events in your area.   Thanks to Al Petteway, Amy White and the folks at Trinity House www.trinityhousetheatre.org for what was described as a 'magical' evening of music.
