Bert Lams - Tom Griesgraber in Ann Arbor this Sunday!

  #
More late breaking event info!!!

California Guitar Trio guitarist Bert Lams and San Diego Stickist Tom Griesgraber will be performing in Ann Arbor on Sunday August 10th.

Bert and Tom have been writing and touring together for several years now and are supporting their recent CD release "Unnamed Lands". Michigan wasn't part of their original stop but since they were going to be in the area, they got in touch with Oz and put together a performance at Oz's Music in Ann Arbor for Sunday and then clinics for both Stick players and guitarists on Monday. You can reserve a spot ahead of time by calling Oz's at 734-662-8283 or you can show up and pay at the door.

If you're within driving distance from Ann Arbor, you really should check these guys out. They are a fantastic duo

2014 Spring Concert Series

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS – Save these dates!!

As we put this newsletter together, even we were impressed by the caliber of artists for this, our final season.  Each and every one of them is an elite world class guitarists.  And perhaps it is fitting that in 2001, our first concert performer was Don Ross and Don will be the one to end an era with us in May.

It would be great to see all of you come out and support our upcoming artists!

Peppino D’Agostino-  Saturday March 8th

Not sure how one goes from being self-taught after playing his cousins guitar at age 10, to being  named “Acoustic Guitarist Of The Year” in 2007 by Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers Choice Awards and also  Guitarist Of The Year” by Fingerstyle Guitar in 2008, but Peppino sure has the recipe.  Peppino returns for his second visit with MFGS and has received accolades from renowned guitaris Andy Mckee.   Peppino’s command of the instrument is amazing,” says McKee. “He can play in so many styles, employing many different techniques. He is one of the most versatile acoustic guitarists I’ve ever met.”   And another guitarist you’ve heard of , Tommy Emmanual: “  Peppino’s music is deep and beautiful.”

Michael Chapdelaine – Saturday March 29th

Michael Chapdelaine is the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres; the Guitar Foundation of America International Classical Guitar Competition and the National Fingerstyle Championships at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield , Kansas.  From New York's Lincoln Center to the Cactus Cafe in Austin, from Milano to Bangkok, Michael continues to enchant, dazzle and surprise audiences and critics alike as he redefines the modern acoustic guitar with his amazing technique, "soulful" expressiveness, and versatility as a performer, composer and arranger/producer. His performances, played on both steel string and classical guitars, include musical styles ranging from blues to Bach to country to rhythm n' blues as he wins his audiences hearts with breath taking technique and the poetic magic of his original musical portraits and landscapes.

Muriel Anderson - Saturday April 26th

Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. An engaging performer, her obvious joy of music, humor, and facility across musical genres is revered by guitarists and audiences worldwide. She has recorded with country legend Chet Atkins, performed in New York with Les Paul, at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall with the Chicago Symphony and in Tennessee with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. She is host and founder of Muriel Anderson’s All Star Guitar Night®, the premiere music event at the semi-annual NAMM music trade shows, and also the founder of the Music for Life Alliance charity.  She is a prolific composer of music on guitar and harp guitar, and tours year round in North America, Europe and the Far East.

Don Ross with Caleb Graham- Saturday May 17th

Don Ross has  been touring the world long enough now to have become an influence on a generation of guitarists and other musicians. He feels fortunate to have grown up sheltered from the influence of too many other acoustic guitarists, as it had made it easier for him to focus on the composing and playing of music, rather than focusing on technique-based pyrotechnics. That said, he has still managed to be the only player to win first place twice at the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 1988 and 1996.

Don will be performing with a guitarist that you are lucky to see at this stage of his career. Calum Graham won the Canadian International Fingerstyle Competition in 2010 and steadily has matured into one of the top young guitarists in the world.

All Shows are at Trinity House Theatre
38840 West Six Mile, Livonia, next to I-275

$20 & Trinity House Members $17

 734-464-6302  Door @ 7:30 – Show @ 8pm   Online tickets available this Saturday at www.fingerstyle.org

Each performer will offer a 2 hr guitar workshop at 3pm the day of the show. Workshop tickets are $40 and this gets you a $10 discount on your concert ticket.

STOCKING STUFFERS!!!

Not sure where to start with this one but we are feeling Really BLUE!   L.

Our dear friend and big time MFGS supporter Paul Murphy is ending part of his BlueFish Music commercial venture.  It’s hard to run a store, spend time with customers, do repairs , provide lessons and not end up working 16 hours a day.  Hard to keep up with your kids that way!

Paul will be eliminating the commercial side of his store and Starting Next Week he will be having a huge sale on all of the inventory at Bluefish Music! Paul has more than stocking stuffers too!!

Stop by or call and let Paul help you find something nice for the guitarist in your life! All sorts of guitars from acoustic to electric to bass to mandolin to ukulele!  Pickups, amplifiers, strings, books, capos, picks …. and anything else having to do with guitars.  This is the end of a 10 year adventure for Paul.

Paul is not totally gone since  he will still do guitars repairs and have a studio for lesson  out of Bluefish.   Paul is a great guy and so we wish him well.

Do stop by and get a great deal on some nice stuff.  Keep him in mind for  future lessons or guitar setups or repairs. We all would trust our guitar repairs with Paul!    All the best Paul!!

744 Starkweather St, Plymouth, (734) 927-0675 –

Hrs: Mon-Thu, 1pm-8pm; Fri,1pm-6pm; Sat, 1pm-5pm; closed on Sunday

Here is a Great Idea for a stocking stuffer for your guitarist!

One of our MFGS friends, Trevor Gordon Hall (he performed here in Feb. 2013), is going to record with Windham Hill founder/guitarist Will Ackerman.

In order to help finance this amazing opportunity he has created some great deals for us.  How about for $50 you can get 2 of his signed CDs, one of them is the one he is working on with Will Ackerman and also a 30 minute skype guitar lesson!  For $100 you get 2, 45 min skype lessons or 4 tickets to a show near you (yes he will play in Detroit in the future) Also you get 4 CD’s, one of them is their combined CD, one is Will’s and 2 are Trevor’s.  Trevor has received great accolades from those who have seen him and even Michael Chapdelaine (the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres) and Michael Manring (bassist who played with Michael Hedges)  who is one of, if not,  the best bass guitarist in the world; both have great things to say about Trevor.   Check out Trevor’s site and you will really surprise any guitarist you know!  You can go from $15 up to $5,000 and this is a win-win deal!!!   Check this out !http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-trevor-gordon-hall-record-with-will-ackerman

And another Great Idea from one of our big time supporters and friend of MFGS , Rob Poland of Candyrat Records.  Pick out some of the CDs of his great stable of musicians at www.candyrat.com

Another idea is Candyrat’s Limited Edition flash drive with 100 of their top recordings for only $50.  http://www.candyrat.com/artists/FlashDrives/Top100Tracks/

Noel Night is December 7th in Detroit! Guess who's coming to town?....

Well.... it's not Santa, not just  yet, but it does involve a gift!  And it will be a surprise when you hear it and probably the most pleasant surprise when you go see the California Guitar Trio along with the Montreal Guitar Trio for one of 2 concerts on Dec. 7th.   Trust us...we were there last year and it will be a packed house and more importantly it will be one of the more memorable performances that you will see. We told you it was a gift but Did we tell you that it is for FREE!!!   We recommend you get downtown quite early, find a place to park and relax and eat.  Then get in line for this amazing show.  This is a bigger venue but last year there were many unhappy folks who came at the last minute and couldn't get in.   Remember there are 2 shows!!!

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Quite a nice guitar weekend coming up.

The venue for the Doyle Dykes Concert this

Friday, November 15th has been changed to the Mirage Banquet Hall @16980 18 Mile Road east of Garfield Road in  Clinton Township.

Tickets are $10 and show starts at 6:30pm

call Huber Breese for info @ (586) 294-3950

Saturday, November 16th Trinity House Theatre presents Ric Hordinski.    Tickets are $20 and $17 for TH members.  www.trinityhouse.org   His show will feature three guitarists and a violin/mandolin player.

Trinity House Theatre 38840 West Six Mile Livonia,  734-464-6302 off of I-275 and 6 mile

Years before Radiohead put Sigur Rós on the map, Ric Hordinski was painting soundscapes with his first band, the cult-faves, Over the Rhine. His instrumental interludes and echo-laden guitar contributed to the band’s rich, layered sound. Since leaving OTR, Ric has appeared on records with John Mayer, David Wilcox, Ben Harper, Richard Thompson, Tony Levin, Bill Kreutzmann, Victor Wooten, Victoria Williams. Robbie Fulks and shared the stage with Johnny Cash and Moby, Bruce Cockburn and the Indigo Girls, Bob Dylan and Over The Rhine. .

He’s produced award-winning records for a host of folks including Over The Rhine, Wilcox and Phil Keaggy. Paste Music has called him “the rarest kind of virtuoso, the kind who knows when not to play” this penchant for understatement has its rewards: Ric received a Grammy nomination in 2003, has received two Cammy awards and a Dove award.

This concert will feature music from his latest album “Arthur’s Garden.” The album focuses on instrumental music with a quieter touch.  Door at 7:30, Show at 8pm

Take a chance on someone you've probably never seen before.......that's what it is all about!

Since you might not know Ric, here is an interview posted on Youtube one month ago.  He was opening for the California Guitar Trio.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8B4sOGwG-U

Here is a little background on the inspiration behind his CD "Arthur's Garden." http://www.citybeat.com/cincinnati/article-24527-music_ric_hordinski.html

And we can't forget Andy McKee this Saturday night, November 16th, at the Ark in Ann Arbor, tickets are $25 and available at the Ark.  Andy has made the cover of both Acoustic Guitar and Britain's Acoustic magazine. He's a virtuoso to beat the band! Andy entertains both the eye and the ear with his use of altered tunings, tapping, partial capos, percussive hits, and with his signature two-handed technique. His guitar performance videos have received hundreds of millions of views on the Internet, and at one point he held the top three positions on YouTube's list of top-rated videos of all time. After starting out on electric guitar, Andy switched as a teen to acoustic and began studying the music of Michael Hedges, Don Ross, Billy McLaughlin, and Preston Reed. To this day he still cites those four musicians as primary influences. Master craftsman and innovator at the same time, Andy McKee is a virtuoso for our time.   http://theark.org/3603.html

  #

Friends of MFGS

Pino Forasitere will be performing this Saturday night, October 26th at Trinity House Theatre for the last MFGS performance of 2013 Doors at 7:30, Show at 8pm.  He is truly a phenomenal composer/guitarist and he receives accolades from anyone who has seen him from artists, guitarists, writers and audiences throughout the world.  So instead of giving you all the press quotes that have been sent out already I took this one from youtube

"ya know, people say things like "he's one with the guitar", etc, they're right, but, damn Pino is one of the very few in the world who can actually make you wonder where the sound is coming from, obviously from the guitar...but don't you for a brief moment wonder? Silly i know, but when you watch him caress that guitar, the passion is just overwhelming, both audible and visual, Pino is on par with Michael Hedges' passion. Just incredible"

Tickets will be available at the door so stop for our last 2013 show! you won't regret it!

Back in 2005 we hosted an unknown guitarist from Italy named Pino Forastiere.  He had a couple Youtube videos and we were intrigued by his work and when we saw him perform here with MFGS we were stunned by his musicality and his flawless technique.  He will be performing Saturday night October 26th at Trinity House Theatre. Door at 7:30, show at 8pm. Tickets are $20 and $17 for Trinity House members.

It is hard to describe Pino's performances but one of our members said Forastiere is "Simply Brilliant".  This will be our last concert of this 2013 season. Pino has added a couple other Michigan shows so if you live in the UP or know anyone near there check these out.

Tuesday October 22nd in Escanaba Michigan at Positively the Center of Success, 1300 Ludington, Escanaba Michigan. Tickets are $12  for information call the center at (906) 789-7446

Wednesday, October 23rd in Marquette Michigan @ The Federation of Women's Club @ 104 W. Ridge Rd. Marquette. Door at 7p , show at 7:30 - Tickets available at the door are $12

Part of MFGS's mission is to support the artist who perform the music we love.  Pino is one of the elite guitarists for this genre in the world.  The renowned John Stropes of the Peck School of the Arts in Wisconsin (and the one who transcribed Hedges works and co-authored 'Rhythm, Sonority, Silence' along with Hedges) says of Forastiere " he  is one of the finest fingerstylists to emerge in the last decade"  (he's talking about on the whole planet!)

This will be an amazing night of music!

Here is one of Pino's first pieces that got us hooked way back in 2005!   http://youtu.be/TqNHaCUIAlw

Born in Latronico, a small village in Southern Italy, Pino moved with his family to Rome in his early childhood. In 1992, he graduated from Santa Cecilia Conservatory with a degree in classical guitar, taking his final exam with a ten-string classical guitar. In the following years, he used the ten-string guitar to play baroque, contemporary and original repertoires.  In 1996, after hearing the music of American guitarist Michael Hedges, Forastiere decided to pick up a six-string acoustic guitar, which is now his only instrument.  The steel string acoustic guitar has transformed his approach to music as described below.
