Free Guitar Concert at Oakland University and other events

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

First of all we would like to thank Calum Graham for his amazing performances at Trinity House , in Windsor at Mackenzie Hall and at a private House Concert.  All 3 concerts had full houses and his guitar compositions and his pieces with his (and Marissa's) vocals were very well received.  Hope to see Calum back this way again.

JB Davies opened for Calum at Trinity House and performed several arrangements and original pieces on his 6 string and harp guitars.  Yeman Al-Rawi opened for Calum at the house concert and showed us some very nice guitar work. Yeman will be competing in the Canadian Guitar Festival this summer in Kingston Ontario.

One of our long time friends Stephen Bennett  www.harpguitar.com is doing some interesting work.  He has a kickstarter fund going so that he can create some amazing music with a symphony titled  Powhatan Suite .  Here is the link and it would be great if you could support this initiative. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/554233714/the-powhatan-suite

JB Davies - March 6th in Lake Orion - May 2nd Calum Graham

  #

Dear friends of MFGS

JB Davies & Ben Hassenger

Friday March 6th

Live! From the Living Room Acoustic Showcase

Unity of Lake Orion
3070 S. Baldwin Rd
Orion Township, MI

Admission: $10.00/person   Doors open at 7:30     Show at 8:00 pm

Ben Hassenger is known as Michigan's Ukulele Ambassador as well as being a guitarist and songwriter that focuses on the important things in life like love, food, dogs, Michigan, and the Detroit Tigers. He will be appearing with Steve Szilagyi on upright and ukulele bass.  Ben’s style is enthusiastic and joyful.  He is a master of the guitar as well as the mighty uke, writes songs about baseball, and has traveled the world as an educator.

JB Davies started playing guitar at the age of a 14 after seeing a John Denver concert with his mom (in matching western shirts). Seeing Leo Kottke perform in 1998 ignited him to become a student of the contemporary fingerstyle guitar movement and JB has studied under some of the top pioneers of the genre. This inspired him to explore the roots of this tradition, leading him to a turn of the century instrument called the harp guitar. JB's repertoire is eclectic, ranging from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to contemporary fingerstyle artists and his own originals. He plays in heavy alternate tunings using acoustic, baritone and harp guitars. His technique utilizes two handed tapping, two hands over the top and other unusual methods.  JB is Co-Founder and past President of the Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society (www.Fingerstyle.org)

Here is JB Davies performeing with Trevor Gordon Hall  this past weekend

Thanks and Giving Some Fingerstyle Updates

  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Hoping that you are enjoying this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend with family and friends.  We wanted to let you know that MFGS will host 2 or 3 concerts next fall through Trinity House.  We took a little break and appreciate Trinity House hosting a few of our favorite artists while we recharged our batteries.

Let us know who you would like to see next fall by emailing us at michfingerstyle@gmail.com .  We can't guarantee that the artists that you want will be available but we will try and we  always like to hear what you think.   How many of you would like to see us organize another picking party or two?  Do you want workshops before the concerts?   Let us know via email or on Facebook!

So what's up with the fingerstyle music scene these days

MFGS friend Trevor Gordon Hall is touring Italy and has a new CD out that has garnered a lot of great press.  Talking about 'Mind Heart Fingers' Willl Ackerman, Founder of Windham Hill Records says “Trevor takes acoustic solo guitar playing to a new level. I'm listening to his new album Mind Heart Fingers right now. Wow! Beautiful. Astonishing. Inspiring. The original compositions and arrangements are stunning.  I enjoy the brilliant uniqueness of the Kalimbatar pieces. Well done Trevor!"   http://www.trevorgordonhall.com/

Word from Italy is that Pino Forastiere is releasing a new album in January.  Always breaking the trail with his music, we can't wait to hear it!   Stefano Barone is also working on new music and recently toured in Russia.  We will keep you updated!

Candyrat Records has some great stocking stuffers!  100 top tracks on a flash drive featuring 21 Candyrat artists including Andy McKee, Antoine Dufour, Andrew White, Calum Graham, Craig D'Andrea, Daniel Voth, Don Ross, Dean Magraw, Ewan Dobson, Gareth Pearson, Hunter Van Larkins, Jimmy Wahlsteen, Kelly Valleau, Mike Dawes, Peter Ciluzzi, Pino Forastiere, Richard Barrett, Sergio Altamura, Stefano Barone, Trevor Gordon Hall, and Van Larkins. Includes 12 bonus Candyrat HD videos. Also some new T-shirts plus a great lineup of artists  CDs to choose from!  www.candyrat.com

Noel Night is coming up on December 6th and a great guitarist friend of MFGS, Nick Schillace performs in Lac La Belle,  an acoustic duo from Detroit with Jennie Knaggs http://www.laclabellemusic.com/store .  They will be performing at Noel Night along with some great music in Downtown Detroit!  Don't miss this! http://midtowndetroitinc.org/events/noel-night/noel-night

Trinity House Theatre is always a great place to hear music and they have a fundraiser for one of their friends Susie Keat who is struggling with some medical bills.  Hey......you can perform that night too!  http://www.trinityhousetheatre.org/posts/promotion/empty-chair-night/

One of our young guitar friends Yeman Al-Rawi entered into the Ernie Ball Prodigy Contest where he can win a trip to Hollywood to record a CD and perform an opening act for one of Andy's concerts.   Yeman opened for Michael Chapdelaine last year and he has a shot at this so take a few moments and go to this spot and vote for him!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rny4BVVXye0

Wishing you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season

Thank You for supporting the artists who create this beautiful music and the venues that allow them to perform!

and an amazing message from  from Tom Griesgraber (Chapman Stick) who performed with Bert Lams (CGT)  for MFGS a few years back.

Unnamed Lands up for Grammy Nominations!

unnamedlands.cover.250

Hi everyone and happy Fall!

I've just received some of the most exciting news ever. For the first time, I'm on the ballot for this year's Grammy Awards for my album Unnamed Lands with guitarist Bert Lams, and you might be able to help :)

We're up for nominations under:

Best Contemporary Instrumental Album
Unnamed Lands
Best Instrumental Composition
"Rebecca" from Unnamed Lands
Best New Artist
Tom Griesgraber and Bert Lams
Album Of The Year
Unnamed Lands

We are also up for consideration under Best Packaging, Best Engineering and Best Liner Notes (categories determined in part by craft committees).

Most award categories are decided by voting members, who are made up of fellow artists, songwriters, engineers and producers. Voting members can listen now on the GrammyPro website, or feel free to contact me if you'd like to dig in deeper. Since the album is a concept album, the booklet with its stories and artwork are a connected piece of the work and are not on the site.

Everyone else.. if you'd like to help us, please share or forward this news with anyone you know who is involved with writing, recording and performing music. Personal notes, or even forwarding our posts on places like Facebook could actually help. We're definitely a small pair of fish in a large ocean here, sharing categories with many of the world's best. It's exciting, humbling and even intimidating being in categories next to some of your musical heroes. My hope is that we can at least make as many folks as possible aware that we're even on the list!

Voting is going on now and ends November 4th.

Thanks as always for all your support! It would be impossible to do what we do without it.

Continued thanks also to our friends Howard Givens, Steve Hall, Jack Durieux, Laurent Durieux and Ben Moore who helped us put the album together.

All the best,

Tom Griesgraber

The Reign of Kindo

According to the band's Facebook page, the members describe themselves simply as, "makers of music". Their style is altogether jazzier than most bands in the genre, "mixing complex, jazz harmonies and dissonances" with a Pop music influence. According to the band's recording studio videos, posted on YouTube by rpoland, they incorporate several other instruments in some of their songs, such as the Cello, the Tenor Saxophone, and many forms of auxiliary percussion. Here is an example of their sound

You can reserve a spot ahead of time by calling Oz's at 734-662-8283 or you can show up and pay at the door.
