  #

Dear Friends of MFGS

Just to let you know that tickets will be available at the door for our last show of the season this Saturday May 14th's performance by Ian Ethan Case at Trinity House Theatre

Tickets $20 and $17 for Trinity House Members

38840 6 Mile Rd. Livonia- 734-464-6302

This is an opportunity to see an amazing musician who might not be back in these parts for some time.

It's our last concert of the season so take a minute.....check this out

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TlsJCqf5NM

think it over...and c'mon out!

Remember if coming from the north that I-275 south is closed at 696 the northbound lanes are open returning in that direction.  If using 275 going south after 696 then alternate route to Trinity House is recommended.

We will start the show a little bit late due to the detour.  It's a Saturday so traffic won't be too bad.....this show is not to be missed!!!

Tickets available for Ian Ethan Case -Saturday May 14th

Dear Friends of MFGS

In fulfilling our non-profit mission of promoting fingerstyle guitar we bring in newer artists to this area as well as your favorite established artists.  On May 14th we are bringing in Ian Ethan Case to this area for the first time.  Ian has received rave reviews from wherever he has performed.

“Few musicians tackle the challenging double-neck guitar, and perhaps few have done it with the intellectual intensity and skill of Ian Ethan Case. Case’s inventive multi-layered compositions are like nothing you’ve heard before. His new album, Run Toward The Mountains, is both meditative and commanding.” — The Christian Science Monitor

Take a few minutes to consider coming out to see someone new, someone you've not seen before and someone making an impact in the world of music!  These performers get pennies on their online downloads and they really need your support to continue to produce such great music. Our friends at Candyrat Records www.candyrat.com have a few CDs to raffle off so c'mon out and you might just get lucky twice!  Once would be seeing Ian Ethan Case….twice would be taking home a free Candyrat CD!

Ian Ethan Case
Saturday May 14th @ Trinity House Theatre
$20 general admission and $17 for Trinty House Members
Doors at 7:30 and show at 8pm.  We will start a few minutes later to let folks who are coming from a distance to get there.

You can pre purchase tickets at www.fingerstyle.org or at the door.

10 Years ago we brought in a young guitarist with really long hair and mismatched sneakers.  Maybe 30 folks came out to see him in our old venue in Ferndale.   Here is an actual quote from our newsletter at the time!  " On Saturday, February 11th, 2006 at 7:30 pm the Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society presents one of today's finest young fingerstyle guitarists, Andy McKee.  Andy is hailed by many musicians in the acoustic world as the most promising fingerstyle guitarist to arrive on the scene in some time".  Now we cannot even book the guy!  Incidentally he is coming to town on Sunday June 19th and we will send more info in the next newsletter.

Regarding Ian's concert.  Please remember that there is some roadwork on 275 from 696 south to 5 mile road.  If coming from the northeast probably take the Southfield expressway to I-96 and go to I-275 and go north  to 6mile and Trinity House is just left turn off the xway.  If coming from the west then get off at Novi and drop down to  6 mile.  From the north you might just go west to Novi and drop down.  Here is a map.

Last MFGS Show for 2016 Spring Series

  #

Friends of MFGS

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, our good guitar loving friends at Minor 7th sent us a link and said "book this guy if you can".  We checked him out ..... found open night and did just that!

We booked Ian Ethan Case for Saturday May 14th at Trinity House Theatre.   Show starts at 8, doors are 7:30. Tickets are $20 and $17 for Trinity House Theatre Members.  Tickets available at www.fingerstyle.org

We consider ourselves friends so we are telling you "go see this guy!".  It is so nice to hear about and to go see someone perform who you have not heard of and who's approach to the guitar is refreshingly new and amazing! We probably won't be able to book him for 2 or 3 years, if that!  By then you might have to fight be able to get tickets to see him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgFEVN-1AOU

In January 2013 Ian was invited to perform with some of the world’s foremost guitarists and bass players as part of Muriel Anderson’s "All-Star Guitar Night" at the annual NAMM convention in Anaheim CA, where he shared the stage with Robben Ford, Victor Wooten, and Stanley Jordan, among others. Since then he has gone on to perform with some of the most respected artists in his genre, including solo bass icon Michael Manring and Grammy Award-winning reed player Paul McCandless (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Oregon), as well as top-notch classical musicians from the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.

The accolades for Ian are endless.  Here are a few more.

“...a style beyond even the great double-neckers like Jimmy Page and Richie Sambora...an inventively new vein of guitar playing.” “It’s entrancing to watch...as he rambunctiously weaves between fret boards, slapping and tapping the sounds of the guitar to life seemingly effortlessly in a style that you’ve likely never seen before.” -Bill Mickelson - Port Orchard Independent (WA)

The results of his exploration are stunning, beautiful, moving and expressive...be prepared to hear something like you’ve never heard before, to venture into wild and uncharted territory.” -Jen O’Callaghan - Nashua Telegraph / Encore / Granite Sounds (Nashua, NH)

" A sonic feast, an epic journey both aurally and conceptually....Each piece is a mini-symphony that holds the attention fully. Run toward the Mountains is a major achievement which is sure to confirm Case amongh the ranks of significant artists at work today!"   -    Minor 7th

Don't Miss This Show with Ian Ethan Case! You Won't Be Disappointed!

Again, Stefano Barone www.stefbarone.com would like to thank all the folks who helped make his tour  tour a huge success. Special thanks to Brian Kaufman www.bkjounalism.com who chose Stefano's music to back his beautiful and important film "The Eye of The Wolf' which was featured at the Detroit Free Press Film Festival, www.freepfilmfestival.com . Just added - May 14th Ian Eathan Case

  #
Dear Friends of MFGS

We are pleased, happy and quite excited to announce that on Saturday May 14th Ian Ethan Case will be performing at Trinity House Theatre.  You may not have heard of Ian and honestly we hadn't either until a few months ago our friends at www.minor7th.com gave us a heads up on this guy. Ian Ethan Case has been performing under the radar now for several years and now this is your chance to see him for his first Detroit area appearance.

Saturday May 14th @ Trinity House Theatre

8pm ,  Doors at 7:30

38840 Six Mile Rd, Livonia   I- 275 and 6

(734) 464-6302

Tickets are on sale now on our website www.fingerstyle.org

$20 for general admission and $17 for Trinity House Members

Ian is a Boston-based acoustic double-neck guitarist and Candyrat recording artist www.candyrat.com.  He is one of only about five musicians worldwide to tackle the double-neck guitar in earnest, he fluidly combines a variety of self-invented playing techniques necessitated by his multi-layered compositions, which, taken together, have begun to establish the instrument’s musical validity perhaps more so than the work of any other artist.

Playing the double necked, 18 string acoustic guitar would be so difficult to imagine but playing it the way Ian does one would have to say it is just stunning!  Here is one of his tunes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TlsJCqf5NM

“Ian Ethan represents something so new in musical approach, that the result is near impossible to pigeon hole into a ‘sounds like’ statement. It has been my personal privilege to observe his unwavering and deep exploration of this new technique and on a relatively rare instrument; the original music of Ian Ethan Case is not to be missed.”      Emmy-winning composer and producer Peter Bruce Wilder

“His new recording, Run Toward the Mountains, is a transfixing brand of energetic minimalism, with intense grooves and a harmonic sense reminiscent of Pat Metheny’s best moments.”   Don Ross

And Don't Forget that you can still see Stefano Barone in Big Rapids on Thursday April 14th at Galloup Guitars, On Friday the 15th in Petoskey at the Red Sky Stage and Traverse City on Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Hall!

Stefano will be performing on this Thursday March 31st at the International Center for Creativity 1266 Manning Parkway in Powell Ohio, just north of Columbus. There will be a 'Meet and Greet' just before the concert so check this out if you're in the area and pass this down to your guitar friends in Ohio. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/live-at-the-icc-stefano-barone-composer-recording-artist-fingerstyle-guitarist-extraordinaire-tickets-22655390884

Saturday May 14th - Goran Ivanovic Trio!

Although this is a bit of a reach for our typical solo fingerstyle guitarists performances you will find yourself listening to a refreshing jazzy, Latin, Eastern European sound on this night.

Take a guitarist who was born in Croatia and at age 12 entered one of the most prestigious music schools in Europe 'Mozarteum' in Salzburg where he studied under such famed guitarists such as Eliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch.

Then after years of performing on his Richard Brune nylon string guitar, mix him with a drummer and bass player in Chicago and you have the Goran Ivanovic Trio!

The Goran Ivanovic Trio will perform at Trinity House Theatre in Livonia on Saturday May 14th.

    Billy McLaughlin Concert - Cancelled

      #
                                                      Dear Friends of MFGS

We are sorry to announce that due to a family emergency the Billy McLaughlin/Jeff Arundel Concert for this Saturday November 21st at 'The Barn' has been cancelled.

Like with Stefano Barone's cancelled concert earlier this fall, both artists would love to reschedule with their Michigan audience.  We are wishing the best for them and their families.

All of the refunds for tickets purchased online are being refunded and if there is an issue please email us ASAP at michfingerstyle@gmail.com

Wanted to toss out a huge thanks to Al Petteway, Amy White and their accompanist Sally Sparks for a really entertaining concert. What great musicians and genuinely nice folks they are.   They performed at Trinity House Theatre and at Acoustic Routes Concert Series in Saline.  Acoutic Routes is putting on some great shows so catch their schedule on Facebook by typing in Acoustic Routes Concerts.

Remember that Trinity House Theatre is putting on great concerts all the time and stay in touch with them at www.trintyhousetheatre.org

GREAT NEWS ! - this is a message copied from guitarist Brian Gore's (of International Guitar Night) facebook page!

"Pino Forastiere  is now teaching guitar online! But what he's really teaching is how to be a creative musician using guitar - which is a much bigger deal than just teaching, and something very hard to find. He is a scholar of Michael Hedges, and has dissected all aspects of tapping style - so he can really explain how to produce the best attack and tone with those techniques. He also views steel string guitar playing from a compositional perspective, which is very helpful. I should also add he is a brilliant composer himself... Also, nobody loves music more than Pino. I would recommend him highly!!"

We hope to have Pino back next year.  Lessons from an amazing musician and guitarist at the touch of your fingertip! Contact Pino through his facebook page or pinoforastiere@gmail.com  http://www.pinoforastiere.com/

We are always looking at new artists and new ways to get the word out to folks about our concerts.  Our mission is to support the artists so advertisements in newspapers is way too expensive.

      #

    Dear Friends of MFGS

This is our last concert of 2016!

This is an opportunity to see one of the legends of fingerstyle guitar in an intimate setting.  Billy McLaughlin emerged back in the Michael Hedges era as one of the preeminent fingerstylists in the world and his Album 'Fingerdance' reached Billboard's Top Ten Chart.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Lr79aMTYPc

Saturday November 21st. Tickets are $25 , Door at 7:30 Concert at 8pm.

    Tickets available at www.fingerstyle.org

Billy will be accompanied by his good friend Jeff Arundel.

This concert will be at 'The Barn' in Rochester Hills by Walton and S. Adams just east of Meadowbrook.  The Barn is just what it is....A Barn that has been repurposed into office space but has room for about 40 folks.

Since this is a private residence the venue address will be on the ticket.

You may have heard that due to focal dystonia, Billy has had to relearn using the guitar by switching hands.......an incredible difficult feat for someone of that level of performing.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_8EV1KzWOY

You'll have an opportunity to meet Billy and Jeff after the show and you can bring a drink of your choice to the concert.

Update on Pat Donohue's Concert and Workshop.

      #

    Dear Friends of MFGS

Just to let you know that there are a couple dozen tickets still available for Pat Donohue’s concert this coming Saturday, September 26th at Trinity House Theatre in Livonia.  We can’t stress enough on what a great guitarists and entertainer that Pat Donohue is.  Maybe another quote would help sway you to come out and see one of America’s great guitarists.

His playing is rich with active, nimble bass lines that would in themselves seem to give a guitarist plenty to do. Laid against them are the complex chord work and elaborate, deftly-executed single-note runs. It's about as much harmonious sound as can be produced by two hands, wood, and strings...”Los Angeles Times

And Just as important!  We get questions on why we don’t have any more guitar workshops?  MFGS took a break from sponsoring concerts for a while and along with that we backed off of the guitar workshops.  Pat Donohue asked if we would sponsor one of his workshops and he is one of the preeminent guitar teachers in the world! This is an opportunity for guitarists of all levels to sit with him for 2 hours, watch him perform, have him watch you play, learn some theory, learn some licks, ask any questions that you want and then get $10 off his concert ticket price!  Sounds like a deal to me!

We had posted our old number 248-646-4030 and there seems to have been a glitch in signing up so if you tried to call and didn’t’ get through here is a new number and an email address.  We do need a minimum of 4-5 guitarists so call or text 248-953-6223 or email michfingerstyle@gmail.com.   Guitar workshop is at Trinity House from 3-5 pm and you can pick the best seats for the show and then take a break and come back for the show.

2 Hour Guitar workshop is $40 and you then get $10 off of the concert ticket price.

      #

    Dear Friends of MFGS

Sometimes we are presented with the ability to help others in need. Kevin Ransom was a music writer for the Detroit News and Ann Arbor News for a total of 25 years and he gave a lot of effort and time supporting local artists; now it is our turn to support Kevin! . Kevin has had a string of bad fortune and is in need of our assistance. There is a benefit concert featuring many regional musicians at the Ark this Monday, August 24th. The article link will give you more info and if you cannot attend the concert then you can help out through a 'Go Fund Me' account set up for Kevin.
